Hi, I am from the Manitoba forum and am wondering if anyone could tell me about the WLS program in Medicine Hat. I don't currently qualify for the program in Manitoba and looked into Edmonton and was a little put off by the travelling for the modules etc as it would be hard to take extra time off work and I have a special needs child that  makes stuff like that difficult.

What kind of surgery do they do in Medicine Hat? Could you supply me with a name and phone number that I could forward to my Dr?

Thank you again for your help! Good luck to all of you.

Hi Karen, the doctor's name is Dr. Nohr i don't have his number handy sorry,   once your doctor sends in your referral they will contact you with a date to meet with him, at that time you will also meet with a dietician that morning and see Dr. Nohr in the afternoon.  When you go to leave they will give you a surgery date, don't forget to ask to be on the canellation list.  Since, i had my surgery last Nov. with him he has increased the number of surgeries he does, i had to wait almost a year but, i think the wait time is shorter now.  The next time you will see him is in the O.R. personally, i think he is fabulous!  There is no counselling or modules, but the dietician is always available for questions as are Dr. Nohr's staff.  You can get his # from the internet or 411, he does basically gastric bypass, open or laser (the wait for the laser is longer), i personally had the open because i had to high BMI for the laser.  Good luck to you and i hope this helps.  Arlene

Tjank  you very much for your help. I am seeing my Dr the beginning of August so hopefully we can get a referral sent away quickly.

I can see by your ticker that you are doing very well. Congratualtions.

I have Dr. Nohr's contact information right here.

Dr. Nohr
692 7 Street S.W.
Medicine Hat, AB
PH: 403-580-4610

He does the RNY open and laproscopically.  My family physician faxed in my referral the summer of 2009.  My consult was April 2010.  At the consult they booked me a surgery date for December 2012.  I am having the surgery done laproscopically.  I am on the cancellation list and I am hoping desperately that I get in before December 2012.  I have heard as well that Dr. Nohr has increased his number of surgeries.  Do know that he does not do any surgeries during the summer.  There have been a few people on this forum who have gotten their surgery way before their initial date.  So I am hoping...

Take the time to do as much research as possible.  Dr. Nohr does not really have any pre/post care.  But like Arlene said, they are available to contact by phone if you need help with something.

Thank you all for your help. I am going to give this info to my Dr and have him refer me. I hope I will get the call to go to Winnipeg if they open their criteria but this way I will eventually get to see someone.

Hey,

My name is Holly, I live here in Medicine Hat, AB. I just wanted to know if anyone has had the surgery recently, and was it covered by Alberta Health? Or did you have to pay? I also was wondering, if there is someone else who would maybe be interested in contacting me personally for maybe support if you are in the middle of the process to do all of this? I would appreciate any feedback I could get!
