Full Fluids

Hi all I just had my gastric bypass surgery on May 2nd, felt like death until they took out my nasal tube and then felt fantastic after that. The day after the tube came out was hard as I developed dumping syndrome and was in bad shape . The day I got home was saturday and i had an episode with my calcium pill where it got lodged in my throat and I puked. This morning was not bad as I felt better after going for a walk but sleeping is tough because of the staples and tube still in my stomach. I am unable to consume a half cup of anything yet so I am having a hard time getting everything in and feel I am forcing myself to eat when all I really want to do is drink. The question I have is that during the full fluid period, should I do what make me feel better or what the handout says I should do. The way I have felt recently I am more inclinded to do it my way. Thoughts please.

hi shelley
if you just had the surgery on the 2, i think you should only still be on full fluid. i had mine on the 3 and was starving until i had some cottage cheese. i got into trouble with the nutitionist. he said only full fluids for 2 weeks. someone please correct me if i'm wrong

I agree full fluids is 2 weeks but since that includes cream soups, yogurt, protein shakes, I still refered to it as "eating" so perhaps that is all she means!

sorry for the confusion, I have my question answered. I do have another however and that is how did you guys sleep when you got home. I have tried every position there is and cannot get comfortable or sleep for more than 30 min at a time.

are you still in that much pain?  for the first while i slept with a pillow on each side of me.  this helped to keep me in place.  a few days ago i flipped around and it woke me up cause i was so surprised. i'm sure once you start to heal, it will happen fast.   make yourself a nest out of pillows, make you feel way more comfy

I had my surgery with the same Dr. and I totally agree with the tube up the nose part.  I was not even aware that I would have one!  Those first couple of days with the tube were hell.  Not drinking water for 2 and a half days... I was chewing ice chips and spitting non stop.  Dr. Norh is much less restrictive with the diet plan then other doctors.  My sheet had that I could start to introduce 1 new food each day after day 14.  I was able to tollerate 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese at that point as well as boiled eggs.  If you mostly feel thirsty though, I would stick to eating soup.  At this stage it is really about recovery.  I would put soup into a travel mug so I felt like I was drinking a coffee.

As for sleeping, well I could not lay on the bed, I still dont.  I prop myself up to about a 45 degree angle and sleep on th couch.  Last night in my sleep I turned over on my side and was immediatly awoken with pain.  I am not sure when I will get back to bed sleeping but the couch, propped up gives me a pretty good sleep.

I slept on the couch for 2-3 weeks propped up. I was amazed at how well I sleep considering I couldn't sleep there before.. or since. lol
When I got to teh bed I slept propped up 45 degrees with a pillow nest as someone called it so I wouldn't get my guys elbow accidently!! I fully laid down and to the side a little at a month and things moved quickly from there!!
It will just get better and better!!

i cam home from the hospital yesterday. Had my VSG on wed. Im doing supprisingly good. I did find out i have a reaction to the liquid codine.. so i only use it at bed time. Today was my first FULL DAY home.. I am staying at my mother-in-laws ... since she has no stairs and her bed is on the floor :)
how i sleep.. is alone.. with tons of pillows around me. and i am somewhat on my side. In the night i wake to use the washroom... and i turn and sleep on the other side.. cause with the pillows i dont move at all and my hip starts to hurt :)

I am on full fluids for 2 weeks (14 days) i have had water, milk, applesauce, popsicles, yougart, for dinner we went out *i wanted to get some walking* to dennys. and i ordered a 1/2 glass of milk and side of mashed potatoes. *2 scoops of potatoes*i asked for a seperate bowl.. and took 1/2 of ONE scoop and added about 15 mls of milk and made it really creamy and it took me 45 min.. but i ate it and it was warm and yummy :) i a lso bought sugar free jello and fat free poodings. but have not tried them.

Yeah you, Sarah!!

How long will you be staying at your MIL's? What all are you allowed on full fluids?

I have several flavours of protein powders that you're more than welcome to samples of to see which ones sit ok.
