Diet

I am probably one of the worlds most fussy eaters and that is probably what got me so over weight to begin with. Don't like yogurt or cottage cheese. Any suggestions on good foods to eat that would provide me with the protein needed. Surgery booked for May 9th and just a little nervous

Shelly,

I eat cheese sticks that give about 5 grams of protein per one. I do cottage cheese every once and awhile but I don't like it often. I also cant drink milk or have yogurt as my stomach doesn't like it anymore.

Because I can't get my full protein in due to my lactose restrictions I am allowed to have a protein drink daily. So I have a premier chocolate protein drink from Costco mixed with a banana and ice. It is quite good. Or I'll have a snack size smoothie from booster juice.

Honestly, it just is making what works for you. But you won't fully find that out until after surrey as your tastes may change. Same with your food tolerances. I used to LOVE frozen yogurt, I can't have them now. My stomach will not let me. I just tried one tonight as I'm working at the Home and Garden show and it is a no go.

So make your own list of what works for you... Within your surgeons guidelines of course.

I'm lucky and DO like cottage cheese and yogurt, but I had an idea today that you might find useful. Once past clear fluids, instead of living on canned cream soups that have tonnes of sodium but no actual food, why not purée real, homemade soups? There are so many yummy options that way, and surely pureed chicken/veg or lentil soup has more protein than the canned stuff. You can add some unflavoured protein powder to it while blending to bump up the protein some more.

Once you get to mushies, why not do what I did for my kids - buy one of those baby hand mills and run actual food through it? I'm picturing butter chicken with some Greek yogurt added, but I bet you have lots of things you like that could be put through one of those mills. Roast pork and applesauce? Baked salmon? Roast beef with a little gravy and cooked veg? Any sort of cooked fruit or vegetable that you like with some protein powder added if needed.

There's no reason to eat tasteless packet food if you're willing to
use your ingenuity.

What are your favourites that you could adapt?

Shelley,
I'm right on the fussy eaters bench with you and so I tend to stick with the foods that I know work for me. I also have a milk protein allergy so a lot of foods are no-no's for me and lucky me I'm also allergic to shell fish which has lots of protein.
Anyway here are some food staples for me
-Chili
-Tuna
-Chicken
-Eggs, Eggs and more eggs...lol
-Weigh****cher meals....can usually eat half
-Turkey bacon
-Ground Beef/Turkey/Chicken
-Split yellow peas soup.....1/2 cup ='s 30 grams of protein
-protein bars
I sometimes will have a little veggies or maybe some fruit just because I was told my stored protein levels are low cause I'm not eating much carbs.

Good Luck and don't be nervous, you'll be just fine and you'll have so much fun exploring your new life.

Kee.

thanks everyone for the good tips. I am really worried right after I get out of hospital.

Everyone is different but when I left the hospital I was still on a full fluid diet for 2 weeks. Things like jello, sf popsicles, flavored vitamin water, watered down tomatoe soup and any type of soup broth, tea and juices. You can also have milk, cream soups,sf puddings and yougurt but I didn't like those things. Your dietation will go over this stuff with you

After 2 weeks you can advance to  mushie/soft foods like mashed potatoes,  eggs and tuna. Pureed chili and veg soup. I didn't actually eat normal food for about 5-6 weeks mostly cause I was scared to try new things. I still have anexity over trying some new foods. I've only had to episodes of stuck foods leading to slimmies which mostly was cause of not chewing well enough.

Ummm Slimmies are kinda like when your food gets stuck and it can't go down your body produces an abundance of saliva to try and help it but all it does is sit on top of your food making you feel like your gonna vomit and then when you do it mostly all slimmie spit. Sorry for the description but it's kinda the only way to describe it.

I used to be an R.N so don't worry about grossing me out!!! I didn't know any of that so it's good to know so I can prepare myself well in advance (I'm a planner)) and understand what things may happen, and why and what to do to solve any problems that might arise!!! Is that a long sentence or what?!?!?!? Thanks for your honesty!!!
