I am brand new to this site and am so grateful I came across it :)

I'm seriously interested in getting a Lap Band procedure done and am hoping to get more information on the process from start to finish.  I guess the first step is talking to my family doctor about the surgery for a referral...but what happens from there?  Does Alberta Health Care cover the cost of this procedure?  How long does it take to get in for a consultation?

I am currently 280 lbs - 5'7" - 43.8 BMI and from what I've read so far would be a candidate for the surgery, i've tried at least half a dozen weight loss programs with some results (usually 20 lbs lost) but have always gained it back.

I would love to hear about your experiences, tips, what to do, what not to do etc.

Thanks so much,

Amanda

Hello Amanda,

I have done alot of research and can certain help answer some of your questions, and might have the answers your looking for.

I spoke with my Doctor in Alberta and she advised that 300 people participated in the programs and they selected 25 to have the procedure.  But don't be discouraged I a may be able to lift your spirits.

Will add you on my friends list so that we can speak about this one to one!

Hi I am considering lap band surgery as well and would love to have some information on it too.

I spoke to my doctor in Alberta as well and told me that she will refer me but I would love to speak to some one who has had the surgery and what to expect.

Any information you can or would share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Amanda,

I live in Blackfalds and I am also trying to find out what surgeons perform lap band procedures in Alberta and if any of the costs are covered by AHC or private insurance.

I have been in contact with Slimband, but really don't like the idea of travelling to Toronto for the procedure.

Can you add me as a friend so we can share what we find out?

Thanks,
Dawna

I'm also looking for info on how to get the surgery in Calgary. Anyone know if you can pay for lapband surgery in Calgary out of pocket to speed up the process?  If so how much is it?

Hi there

I think dr Mitchell is doing a private clinic for these surgeries. Take a look at this website

http://www.obesitysurgery.ca/landing/lapband.php?_vsrefdom=P ayPerClick&gclid=COfr2tr8gqwCFQxvhwod-hI-1Q

I think it is about 17,000 dollars, or that is what is close to in Toronto

Hi there

I am currently in the program through the weight management program here in Calgary. I would like to tell you how wonderful the program is. When first entered the program this year there was about 300 people and I believe there is about 60 people left at close to the end of the program.

They did increase how many surgeries there are this year from 25 to 50 I am soo thankful to the Alberta Health system for increasing how many surgeries there are. We all have a good chance. The program itself they say it is like a part time job it requires a great deal of commitment. It is an eye opening program, if you are considering the surgery the program is totally worth going too.

I started the process August 2010, I am hoping to have surgery before the end of the year this year if I get picked.
