I've KNOWN for a week.
Congrats and good luck!! You will do great.
I didn't bring much to the hospital. I would bring socks or slippers for walking. They give you an extra gown for walking and I didn't want to change clothes much.
I LOVE listening to music and reading but all I did in the hospital was sleep, space out, walk, and try to drink water/ eat icecubes. You really aren't there very long.
It's a really good idea to stock up on books and magazines etc. for when you are home!
Also prepare your home, for example, I adjusted the bed I had at home so it was easier for me to get out. (using this really weird side roll technique)
Stock up on clean comfy loose pants without tight waistbands, that's where your incisions are.
And same for bra - no underwire, there is an incision near there too (just below).
It can be tough for a few days. Just remember, the body does heal and the results are amazing!

Surgery VSG Oct.8 2010. 23pds lost pre-op. I am 5'6" tall. Feeling amazing!
I guess I was one of the lucky ones... I was given a private room. No roomate to listen to... I took my Ipod, books, crosswords, etc to the hospital too... but never used any of them. If I wasn't sleeping, I was walking. Definately bring some comfy slip on shoes with you for walking.. slippers just don't cut it...
I have never seen a dirtier hospital!!! The wards were fine but as soon as you get into the public areas, filthy!!!!! I couldn't believe how dirty it was. When I went home, I threw out my slippers...
I was really lucky that my surgery was in the middle of the summer... there is a lovely atrium outside but on the hospital grounds that I used to walk... It was a little slice of heaven. There was a retaining wall there to sit on when you get tired... Just being able to listen to the birds was enough to take my mind back home... but perhaps that was the drugs... (sigh) such good drugs too... LOL LOL
