Protein Suppliment

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking for some info. I live in small town Alberta, outside of Edmonton and I'm looking for a Protein supplement that doesn't taste horrible. I'm looking for the most protein in the smallest amount of liquid. Does any one have any suggestions?

I had RNY on August 19/10 and am having a very hard time getting anywhere near enough protein. For some reason, Meat doesn't like me anymore...   Doesn't matter what kind of meat either, no discrimination here... my stomach doesn't like any of them... chicken, beef, venison, Elk, fish of any kind. I can still do all the milk products and eggs. I've been told that it's a sensitivity and not to worry about it, but I do anyway, lol...

I really need to start getting my protein in other ways. I hate ensure... it doesn't matter what flavour. I think it's the texture of it... yuck yuck...

I was hoping you guys might have another suggestion... I'll try just about anything...

Melody:

I'm the same way...but I can't handle milk products for the most part..but meats aren't an issue. But I'm still not getting nearly enough protein in.

I buy Whey Goument and it actually mixes pretty well. It is the same type that Booster Juice uses for their protein boosters. Good luck! I was also told that GNC Health has sample packs of protein powder that you can buy for $5 I was told to try the different types as it is no fun buying a big container for $50 or so to hate it....I've done that about 4 times now.

Adrianna,
GNC has a money back guarantee policy, as long as there is more than 1/2 a can left they will take it back. It's a terrible waste of money when you don't like them. I for one can't handle any protein drink and I've tried several even the protein shot from Booster Juice, friggin ruined my smoothie.

Good Luck Melody and remember even if you are from a small town there is the internet and places like GNC can do on-line orders. Oh and fyi I've heard alot of people on the Sleeve forum talk about unjury and their unflavored and chicken flavored powder, apparently they are the greatest.

I've found the premixed ones at Costco (Premier, chocolate flavor) to be pretty good.  They are good value money wise and they are only 160 calories, 30 grams of protien and only 1 carb, so perfect really, as long as you like the taste.

I also use one that I buy at Extra foods here in small town AB, by Dyna Whey.  It too is only 150 cals, 30 grams of protien and 1 carb.  They have a chocolate peanut butter one that really really tastes good and mixes well.  I like to have it in my decaf coffee so it's likea chocolate peanut butter mocha!

Of either brand I try to have at least 3 servings of them each day (3 mochas, oh darn!) so that  way I know I'm at least at 90 grams of protein, and then I don't worry so much about getting my minimum protein in for each day via dense foods.  Then I eat sensibly but know for sure that I have my protein at acceptable levels.

I hope this helps you in your search for the right protein for you.

Bye for now,
Sharon

Well this is not a protien supplement, but greek yogurt is very high in protien.  20 grams for i think a half cup.  That's what my dietician recommended to me.

The only problem with Greek Yogurt is that icky aftertaste. Have you tried pureeing cottage cheese instead? I use pureed cottage cheese in dips and spreads - all the protein without the nasty taste. It's also good straight up with cinnamon and a bit of sweetener added - or minced green onion, salt and pepper. Yummy. :o)

Yes, I  was suggesting a protein shake and not a supplement as such.  Good luck finding greek yogurt in small town Alberta, or even the city.  I still cannot find it anywhere but at least there are many other great options too.

Have you tried adding whey powder to soft foods instead? Like - I add a tablespoon (10 grams of protein) to my morning instant oatmeal. The same to a small sugarfree yogurt cup later in the day.

You can also add powdered milk to some things without them tasting vile. 1/3 cup has 8 grams of protein and can easily disappear into some scrambled eggs.

The Costco powder comes in unflavoured, so pretty much disappears into things like slightly cooled soups or Crystal Light, although you'll notice a slight stickiness. I like the vanilla added to Crystal Light - I tell myself it tastes like an Orange Julius. It doesn't, of course, but it isn't bad at all.

If you're a coffee drinker, try mixing vanilla whey with some cold milk, then adding in your coffee. Fake latte anyone?

Also, just because you find Ensure vile doesn't mean you can't get other brands to work. If you find Ensure too sweet, Boost Diabetic is much less sweet and has 16 grams of protein instead of 10. :o) I've also found ice to be my friend. If you can handle cold drinks, try blasting a protein drink with some ice and a SF coffee syrup. I find vanilla protein drink of any stripe vastly improved by SF Chai syrup and some ice. Because it's adding water, it also changes the texture - I notice you have texture issues... Oh! Also look for SF Instant breakfast! 15 grams of protein and none of that thickness you find in the bottled drinks. I think Slimfast has a SF version now, too.

I'm nowhere near the surgery yet, but am doing 1200 calories and 80 grams of protein - close to impossible without suppliments, so I'm getting creative. :o)
