All my questions for Dr. Birch came after surgery. I can't think of any that I really had before surgery. I think I just sat there and listened and just kept on wondering if this was really happening.

You might want to ask how big the "bougie" will be that he uses. I believe they go from size 34 up to 50 and this is what determines the size of your stomach later. That is, if you decide on the VSG. Otherwise, just ask HOW SOON!!

As for question I didn't really have any cause I had done so much research. But be prepared to answer lots or at least I did with Dr Carlos. He was surprised that I knew my stuff so well.

Hi there, did you have your sleeve done in Alberta? I live in manitoba, and am having mine done here, but i have a friend living in edmonton who was wondering if it was done there in edmonton. in mb, it is covered by mb health if you meet their current criteria. luckily enough, i do. how does it work over there in Alberta. any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hayley, Alberta Health does cover the cost of surgery if you qualify. I attended the Weight Wise Clinic in Edmonton. I think the criteria has changed since I started the clinic but I know you have to ask your Doctor for a referral. From my referral time to actually getting in the clinic it was about 1 year.

Now I think you have to be referred and be under your Doctors care and a Dietitian/Nutritionist care for the first 6 months and you have to attend these learning modules in that time as well. Then gradually you will move upstairs to the clinic where you will see a Nurse, Nutritionist, Psychologist and Occupation Therapist and normally the founder of the clinic Dr Sharma, you will only see him once in the beginning and then you will continue with the other team. The appointment around about every 6-10 week and eventually you will see Dr Sharma again and if you qualify he will refer you to the surgical team who will either accept you or reject you. If accept you go on a waiting list for surgery.

I know Capital Health has a web site where you can research the Weight Wise clinic and there is a referral form on there as well. Maybe she could have a look there or maybe someone more new to the program will see this post and be more familiar with the new process.
