Family Reactions

So tomorrow (Oct 13th) I will be 3 months out from surgery.  This past weekend, my entire family left our homes and drove down to BC to see my grandparents as my grandpa is really sick and we are pretty sure that this will be the last holiday we will be able to spend with him.

Well the visit with my grandpa went well but with my grandma, that was a different story.  She decided to give me some of her clothes, and while I'm grateful they are not my style at all.  Then she proceeded to say that she doubts her clothes will actually fit me so I can grow into them.  I looked at the tag and they were all 1x - 3xs.  So I said I'm sure they will fit fine - the top I'm wearing now is a 1x.  Well she looked at me and commented "That must be a big 1x"

OUCH! thanks Grandma.  Has anyone else had this? I have always been bigger than my mum and grandma but now I'm smaller than my mum and about the same size as my grandma but getting smaller and it seems that they both resent me for it.  I'm no longer the biggest one.

Is there anything I can do to show that I'm still me, just a smaller outside?  Sheesh!

Adrianna, not to worry.  You will show them all up one day and you need to stay positive and proud of your accomplishments.  Some people just have a hard time with others' accomplishments.

Well, first I want to say I'm sorry that people are feeling resentful of your hard work and weightloss, that is VERY frustrating.  You deserve words of encouragement and cheer!  So: keep up the good work you look fantastic girl!!

Maybe grandma hasn't realized HOW MUCH weight you've lost and wasn't really saying YOU were big, but was surprised that you two are now the same size because she remembers you were bigger.  So she was surprised when ta-daaaa...looky, they fit!  I really hope that it was surprise and not rudeness :)

Me, I'm the opposite, i'm tall and big boned, so I can lose thirty pounds and only drop a measly size.   I've lost 50 over the course of a few years...and has anyone really noticed NOPE.  I got new jeans this past week, finally down from say a tight 22 to a 18 or 16 (depends on style).  No one noticed.  I've not had anyone be rude to me YET, but my family is so skinny and itty bitty it would take another 100lbs to get close to their size!

Though my small person did come and jiggle my arms and tell me she liked my 'wavy arms' GAH.  Thanks kid.  (I know she means it with love and affection).

HUGS.. That would be tough to deal with. Most of my family have been very supportive to my weight loss.. I have been told I lost a person on many occasion.. I think its tougher when its your family that makes those types of comments.. You are doing amazing and will continue.. I think for me. Personally I know I have come so far. A year ago I was wearing a 6x Im now fitting a 2x ..

Do lots of walking .. Swimming maybe a good thing also..

Damn, jealousy is a B!%$#.

Your family will come around, they are just jealous of your accomplishments and wish they could be losing weight like you.  You are doing amazing and should be proud of yourself, no matter what other people say!

Just remember that you're ultimately doing this for yourself and no one else.  They will come around!

Thanks All. I just I get just frustrated that all my grandma has ever commented on was my weight and how big I was and now that I have lost the size of a small person I guess I expected wow! you look great or something along those lines. Oh well. i konw that I am working my butt off - literally.

Nothing like the good ole grandma burn!

I'd thought my mom was nothing but supportive, but now that I can fit into her size 12 and M/L size clothing she has said some random hurtful things.... like about my previous size, and commenting that a top I borrowed from her is tighter on me and alluding it looks better on her. I've always been the fat daughter, and she's having a hard time accepting that I'm close to the same size as her.

All you can do is take whatever these people say with a grain of salt, and recognize it comes from jealousy. This is also an awesome place to come for support!

Very true..and thanks!

I know, I absolutely love this site.  I wish I knew more about it before I had my surgery, but I was just starting to get involved with the site, but now that I've gotten to know a few people on it, I love it!  I'm so happy knowing that I do have the support here and am able to in turn support other people as well.

Thanks All!
