hey everyone,

i was wondering if any one had to meet with a dietian for six months before being eligable to be referred to the wieght wise program.

I was told that to start with but now they are saying i need the 4 moduals which i knew about, and a meeting with a psychatrist to check my mental health and a pedomator exersize program i have been going to curves  since april but there not sure if thats acceptable.

Thanks for the info :)

Think sound a little different than when I started the program.

First I had my doctor send in my referral and a year later I had my first consult with the clinic. That is when i started seeing a Nurse, Dietian and a psychologist and one visit with the occupatitonal therapist.
There are 10 modules in total and they want you to take all 10 or as many as possible. I only had 9 done when I seen the surgeon and he was find with that and told me not to bother with the remain one cause I was approved for surgery. It doesn't matter the order you take them in.
They do want  you to start with a routine of tracking what you eat, why you eat and how you felt after, also the pedometer is a way to track your activity and going to curves will count towards your activity.
So has your family Doctor referred you yet to the clinic or does he/she want you to try these life changes first.

I opted to go out of the country for my surgery.
May I ask what the wait time is nowadays?
And do you really have to take all these classes and appointments?

What type of surgery are you planning?
I had my surgery 5 months ago and down 101 pounds... or close to it.
Its a great feeling!
Good luck with yours and I hope its soon.

From what I have heard... they have changed a lot of things with the program and are trying to address some of the issues that have arised as a result of people waiting a long time to get into the clinic.

This is the website with the referral information:
http://www.albertahealthservices.ca/services.asp?pid=service &rid=1008784

The big things that were changed were that you need to be under a doctor supervised diet for 6 months and attend 4 modules before your referral is even considered.

When I started out, you were referred and then waited to be contacted to attend module one, after which you could book other modules- then you waited to get a call to go into the clinic for your initial assessment. The goal of the new referral system is for you to have the care and attention of your doctor  while you are waiting- its better! I put on 10 lbs between the referral being sent and my initial assessment.

While you are waiting ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist, then strap on a pedometer and start logging your steps. Take your average for the first week and try to add 100 steps a wee****il you get up to at least 10k steps.

Going out of country is always an option, but it can be a sensitive subject on this board. People who have access to Weight Wise but chose to go out of country and have complications end up needing the care and attention of the surgeons or doctors at weight wise. It means that those of us who are waiting, wait longer because people with complications need emergency care! Also, others can confirm this but I know that in a couple situations there are people who went out of country and ended up in the hospital here for MONTHS and ended up with some very serious and horrendous complications! http://www.drsharma.ca/obesity-risks-of-medical-tourism-for- bariatric-surgery.html

Welcome to your journey and keep us all posted as you go!
