I think it depends on the person - I think EVERYTHING depends on the person. I did not have to do the shallow test or the scope test before my surgery - but I did have to do the swallow after (3times) to confirm that I had no leaks..but the swallow test is normally done once after surgery to the best of my knowledge.

I have a question.   If your BMI is higher...is that when they normally would chose a RNY procedure...and lower a banding procedure?

Don't get me wrong.  I'm 259lbs as of this morning, so I'm no featherweight.  LOL..  My high weight is 296 (ooh look I'm almost down 40 lbs!) <--taken me 3 years to lose 40 pounds.

I'm tall (5 foot 8) so that helps my BMI numbers be a little lower...however, I still have the desire to lose about 100lbs.

What do you think?  Sleeve? Band? RNY?    I keep leaning towards the sleeve.

For those of you who had RNY ...why did you choose RNY over VSG?
I guess I could ask why you all chose VSG over RNY as well :)

Does anyone have extra resources they could point me towards?  I've been all over the boards here and still find that I want to know more.

Thanks,
D.

hi.. I  always say surgery type is a personal choice.. But for me . I wasnt willing to do this again.. I had the RNY in April 6 2010 ..  and  with the complication i would hado  it all over again.

For me it was one shot deal.. I didnt see myself doing the other ones for that reason.. I had lost 82 lbs prior to surgery and since I have lost 77 since a  total of 157... When you see your nurse and RD talkk to them.. they know you some what and they will guide you but  at the end of the day its up to you as its your body. Look at stats as just a part.. as people have said.. Eveyone is different. Surgery Is also...

Dr B did my surgery and he will let you know also what he feels is best after you pick if you dont pick one he believes.. When I told him what i wanted and why he agreeed.

BTW my hubby came with me and was very impressed with Dr B too...

I really liked Dr. Birch, he was very kind and very thorough.  Hubby liked him too.

I'm really leaning towards the VSG.  I really hope all of my tests go well, and that when I see him again he will be ok with my decision.

I don't want to have to fill/unfill, have a 'port', needles make me wiggy..and I don't want to find out 20 years from now that the device in my body has reached it's 'life expectancy' and has to be removed...and bam, all my weight comes back on.  (or I have a complication and it has to be REMOVED and all my weight comes back. )

THanks everyone for your comments and support.

My swallow test is on Friday morning, I see my nurse on MOnday...and we'll see where things go.

Fingers crossed. :)

I'm so glad you are not in love with the idea of the band! It scares the crap out of me... erosions, slippage and port issues, oh my!

I think everyone here tries to help people make choices for themselves and just ensure that everyone has the info- we want everyone to be informed before making such a huge decision and I find that a lot of the information on the band is F-ing scary!

I am sure there are loads of success stories too, so banders don't hate me for saying the above. I just know for myself, the band is not a good choice!
