Dr. Karmali isn't my surgeon but the appts with the surgeons are basically the same.
You and the surgeon review the 3 available surgeries and decide which one you would like and you are either a) approved or b) not and require extra testing and/or weightloss.
Can also leave the appt knowing there is a need  for a scope, ct scan or liquid diet too, prior to surgery. Some people have to shrink their livers and others have to have a better bmi.

If you gain during any appts from this appt one you can also be denied surgery in an instant.

I was approved on May 3rd for VSG with Dr. Birch and do not require a liquid diet prior to surgery or any additonal tests besides pre-admission bloodwork. I've been patiently waiting for my surgery date call and hope it's sooner rather than later.

Good luck to you!

Kim pretty well has it all explained to you and basically it's all the same for each surgeon, if you actually see the surgeon and no one of the team.

But I just wanted to add that I was scheduled to meet Dr. Karmali today but after the blood pressure check and all it ended up being Dr. Carlos Menzes, he's the sweetest and so gentle spoken that you get a relaxed feeling from the get go. He approved me and now it's just a waiting game.

Oh and dont' fret over the appointment being a month away cause before you know it, it'll be here.  It feels like only yesterday I posted saying I was seeing the surgeon in June and now the appt is here and gone.

Good Luck Hun, wish you all the best.

You can either believe it will happen.....or believe it won't.  Both are self fulfilled prophesies. For Me it has happened.  My Surgery was September 21/2010

I have never met Dr. Birch, although he is very intimate with my stomache !  LOL!  I had Menzes as well.  He was very nice and helpful.  My appointment was exactly as described above.

Mendes might have been who I met as well as I too hadn't actually got the pleasure to meet Dr. Birch. This appt is less nerveracking ( for me anyway) than sitting in a room with Dr Sharma and 5 others.

Whether you're approved for surgery or not, they don't leave you hanging and you keep going through with the guidelines BUT....you will get there!! :)

hey congrats!
my advice to you is to do your research now.
research the 3 surgeries and plan out to express which surgery you want and why.
i was approved my first visit which could save you about 6-8 weeks of waiting.
just know what you want and plan to prove you know about the surgeries and explain why you want the one that you do.
karmali is very easy going and he will most likely let you have whatever one you want but you will need to do your research.
if you need any help send me a private message
good luck

Usually they say 5-10% of your weight But Dr Menezes told me yesterday that they find that the longer you are in the program the more increases in weight they find and the more people struggle. I've lost a total of 34 pounds but some of that was before starting the programs.

I stressed so bad about this appointment that I literally made myself sick. Do as I say and not as I do comes to mind when I say this but DON'T STRESS, it doesn't help with the weight loss and breathe, you'll be fine.

Good Luck gettign through the next month, but honestly it doesn't seem like it now but it'll go by so quickly you'll wonder where the time went.

Everyone's case is totally different. How high your BMI has a lot to do with getting approved for surgery as well.

I've lost almost 82lbs since being in the program since August. When starting it's stated to lose 5-10% of your weight and then maintain that weight over the next 6. I've lost 26% but I'm not your average patient.

Read sixfootkat's story....she was turned down for surgery twice before getting approved for RNY in late April and is all set to go in for her surgery on the 15th.

It's all individual! Ask all the questions you need and do your research. Last thing you want to be is unprepared while in there.

Good luck.
