Seeing Dr. Birch in a week and my mind is blank!!!!

I didn't realize how fast the days have been flying since I've been out enjoying the sunshine but EEEEEEKKKKKKKK!!!!! I see Dr. Birch on Monday morning and my mind is completely blank as to what I want to say.

I don't want to get in there and stutter and stammer about why I'm there and why I want bariatric surgery. Sucks that my husband will be in the truck with my 2 sons and not be able to come into the appt with me. I have been endlessly researching the 3 surgeries and VSG is the one for me.
I'm excited to know that I have narrowed the options down to the one that will best fit me. I hope he agrees.

What did you ask your surgeon? What did he say to you? If anixety gets the best of me, I'll be sicker than sick that morning.

Hey Kim

When he came in he said to me "So you are considering surgery?"  I said "Yes"...he asked what type and I told him RNY....I also told him I had done extensive research on all three and decided that RNY was for me. He still went over all three with me..drew pictures of how the surgeries work and how much percentage wise the average person loses....

He said do you want time to think about it?  I told him no.

So he said "Let's do it"...and that was that.

I had questions even though I had my mind made up.  I wanted to make sure that the info I had was correct.  I asked about the Band and the RNY because even thought I wanted the VSG I needed to know that I hadn't missed any info.  It was quick and they set me up with prepping for surgery class, more clinic appointments and maintaining the change class.  They said they would send me for a CT scan (which you might not need) and then I was to wait for a call...if I heard from Lenora (I think that is her name) before they did I was to call them and let them know when my surgery was planned for.  The surgeon said the longest I should wait is 3 months.  That means that I should be in surgery by the end of June!  You might be different as your BMI is lower.  They said that people who do not have to go on a liquid diet can get called in sooner if there is a cancellation because there is no time needed to prep for the surgery.  Good luck!

Now I just wish my phone would ring.....

Ahh...so you have seen Dr Birch?  That's good...and ya I didn't have many questions...he was pretty thorough...he just said you have made up your mind already and I said I had. He said there wasn't much data on the VSG (at the time)...so he couldn't give me too many "stats" on it...but the RNY was considered the "golden surgery"...it works and people are happy with it...and I should lose anywhere from 60 - 80% of my excess body weight. So far I am at almost 70% so...I am extremely happy.

The phone will ring...that you know for sure...it was about 2.5 months till I saw Dr Birch till I went in form surgery.

That's great news though.

Yes it will ring. I just need to be patient about it! I saw one of his interns not actually him, but as far as I know they have flagged me for surgery so I am now moving up the list!

Kim,

Not that I have made it to this appointment yet cause mine isn't until June with Dr. Karmali but my nurse Jina was so helpfull on my last visit. She sat me down with a handout on all the surgeries and techniques they want you to practice before surgery such as not drinking liquid with your meals etc etc.
I don't know if this will help but she also said that the sleeve and the bypass have the same out coming of about 30-40% weigth lost and the lap band only has 20-30%. The sleeve is perferred by alot of patients due to no lack of absorbation but you can also eat more right from the begining. Jina says that the sleeve allows 80ml of food as where the lap band and by pass allow 30 ml.
She told me if any thought came to my mind before my appointment to jot them down in my notebook and that I shouldn't stress about it cause in the end the Dr. will know whats realing in your head cause he's been throught this so many times. She also said if he thinks the surgery method you have chossen isn't what he thinks to be the right one for you he will tell you.
Good luck and kept us informed.
