I'M HOME!!!!! YAY!!!!
Headed out to Medicine Hat from Lethbridge on Sunday, as I was having surgery this past Monday (March 29). I was scared to death..... ask my dad, ask my hubby, ask everyone at the hospital. I had one nurse while I was waiting in the "holding" area to head into OR give me a hug cause she said, "You look so scared. I just want to give you a hug." I was a crying mess from the time my pre-op started at 8:45 until just before they started to give me those first few breaths of oxygen in the OR. My surgery was scheduled for 10:45, but I think it finally happened around 11:30ish. My surgery lasted for an hour and I had absolutely no complications. I did however have a mega one when I was coming out of anesthetic..... I woke up to find myself surrounded by 5 or 6 nurses HOLDING me down cause I was flopping around like a fish. I remember yelling at the top of my lungs "Where the hell am I????" I honestly had no clue where I was. And when I finally calmed down and stuff, I think I was the clown of recovery. I was very "druggily" saying hi to everyone.... even to the people that were getting placed beside me from their surgeries. I was waving to everyone too. lol I know.... I'm a nut... what can I say??? lol
I made it up to the surgical ward around 3:20ish and my dad was watching for me to come up. Yay for dad's. Gotta love him to pieces. Gotta love hubby too. *mwah* I was roomed with an awesome lady who came from Saskatchewan and had had a hysterectomy. I kept dozing on and off the rest of that day, but once Shawn (hubby) and my dad left, me and the roomie were talking all night. lol
I was allowed to have ice chips, but I was not allowed to swallow any of the liquid as my surgeon doesn't immediately do a leak test, and waits 72 hours after surgery to have it done. That was the hardest thing for me, as I'm a huge water drinker and stuff. Anyway, I did good with my ice chips, except in the middle of the night I always seemed to end up dumping my "spit out" basin all over myself. Made for an interesting night if you ask me. Also, my surgeon does not require a catheter as he wants you up and walking as soon as possible after surgery. Getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom for the first time was excruciating. I was screaming away in bed TRYING to get up.
Next morning, I had a very refreshing shower. Thank goodness for benches in the shower.
Had only ONE nurse who I hated with a passion. I'm sure she has something against gastric bypass patients. She wouldn't allow me to have my ice chips because she said I was swallowing them, which I was NOT! I actually was able to have my roomie sneak me in cups of ice when she wasn't looking. lol For anyone who has an upcoming surgery with Dr Nohr.... beware of the evil nurse named Elaine. The student nurses were amazing and would bend over backwards for you. They were the greatest.
The day of the leak test was interesting. I was told that I was the most interesting patient they had. I was the first one that actually LIKED the taste of the barium swalllow. It was creamy and lemony, but it tasted like Mr Clean. lol
About an hour or so later one of the student nurses came in and told me that my NG tube was able to come out and that I could start on my liquids. YAY!!!! That tube hurt coming out. But was nothing compared to the pain of one of the other tube that they pulled out on Friday. I swear that tube had teeth when they were pulling it out. I am so not looking forward to having my feeding tube taken out next Monday (April 12) by my doctor here in town. I know I will be screaming my head off while it's being done as well. I also get my staples out next Monday! YAY!!!!!
I got released from the hospital Friday. YAY!!!! I slept very uncomfortably on the couch the first night home and then begged and pleaded with my hubby to let me sleep in our bed on Saturday. I've been snoozing in our bed since and have been comfortably sleeping.
I have been walking around and stuff. And lost 10 lbs while I was in the hospital. YAY ME!!!
Here's to a thinner me!!!
*hugs*

I guess the feeding tube is there in case I wasn't able to intake fluids by mouth. They would then just inject liquids into your feeding tube with a syringe. But.... it wouldn't have helped anyway cause the tube was blocked. lol When my doc pulled it yesterday it decided to unblock and drained ALL OVER ME!!!! YUCKO!!!!! You wake up from surgery with the feeding tube (G-tube) and a jp drain (which gets removed the day you get discharged). Having the jp drain pulled hurts like heck. I swear it had teeth. lol
Got all 28 staples out yesterday too! YAY!!!! Now I'm anxiously waiting for everything to heal so I can jump into the pool and splash around. Gosh, I've sure missed swimming.
I have had no issues with anything I've been "eating". Hot liquids don't bother me, ice cold liquids don't bother me. I seem to be able to get in about 5 sips and feel that full pouch feeling. I'm having no problems getting in the required amount of fluids every day. Protein hasn't been an issue either. I'm sooooooo looking forward to Friday when I start solid foods. I already know what I'm going to have for breakfast..... a poached egg. YUMMO! My handout from my dietician also says that I can have a slice of whole grain toast with my egg, so I'm heading out to London Drugs today to pick up some of my favorite bread.... sunflower flax. YUMMO! My pouchie is going to be full and happy Friday morning. At least I hope so. lol
