There are several options in Alberta. You could get a referral to either Dr. Farries in Red Deer (only takes referrals one day of the year) , Dr. Nohr in Medicine Hat or The Weight Wise program in Edmonton. All have waiting lists, I am currently waiting for my initial assessment (next month) and I waited about 1.5 years to get into the modules which are a requirement of admission to the program.
As to going out of Country, that would be your choice, but getting a doctor to do fills is hard since most doctors wont fill a band they didnt put in and most people in the programs have a lot of feelings on this... (See board for more info- Topic: Interesting article in the Edmonton Journal)
The bottom line is that you will need to think long and hard. Personally, I need to have the program to help me conquer my issues- I know that surgery without treatment is a recipe for failure for me, you might be different and able to succeed without the support of a team, but there is no way to know until you have the surgery and if you do need the support, and went out of country... you will be left to your own devices.

Funny you mentioned this...I was reading Dr Sharma's Blog this morning...you could probably send him an email www.drsharma.ca.
I have just got my first consultation appointment with a surgeon for April 8, 2010, with Dr Davey. I know nothing about this surgeon except it was recommended through Weight Wise program. Have you heard anything about this Surgeon?

I had my RNY with Dr. Davey May 12/09, and I wouldn't ask for anyone else. I owe him a whole lot. I have lost almost 140 lbs. since surgery, and curently he is booking my panni surgery for approx 7-12 months.
He is a wonderful Dr. and I trust him 100+%.

I initially saw him in Bonnyville in Oct./098 and had my surgery first booked Jan./09 but had to cancel until May of 09. I feel great with no regrets !!
