I am curious does everyone have to do the pre op liquid diet I have been reading about on this site.  What is the purpose of it.  I have only had the intial assessment at the clinic so am not sure of all the ins and outs of everything.
Thanks

I'm having surgery with Dr Nohr in Medicine Hat and he doesn't require a liquid pre-op diet of any kind. That being said, I am choosing to drink 2 protein shakes a day and eat a sensible dinner all next week just to try to lose a bit of weight before I have surgery on the 29th.

The purpose of the liquid pre-op diet is to shrink the liver to make the surgery easier to perform.

*hugs*

My Dr. based mine on the amount of weight I had lost while I was in the program and how much of a surgical risk he thought I was.

I only have 3 days of liquids to do, my dietician told me that this will reduce my sodium and prevent any gain just before surgery.

they say no more than 14 days.  But that being said it is nt a given. Depends on the RN, RD and your  Dr.. ..
