Sarah,
I've been taking metformin for close to  a year now. I have pcos and it causes me to have an insulin resistance. I started off on 500 mg twice a day and I thought I was gonna die. For me it really hurts my tummy and starting off I had diarrhea everyday all day. Once my body adjusted I was fine.
X-mas time they put my dosage up to 850 twice a day and once again it near killed me. Diarrhea all the time and tummy pains, but again once I adjusted it was ok.
They say it should help with weight lost but for me it didn't make any difference but it is helping with my insulin resistance and the pcos.
Good Luck.

Metformin was also extremely tough on my tummy. Constant pain and diarrhea.  I couldn't deal with it. Thankfully, I was able to lose about 50 lbs on my own, and found that I didn't much need it anymore. So, I'm off it for now, til I want to try to conceive at least :)

When i had my first apt at the weight wise clinic... the nurse wanted me tested for PCOS.  So i went to my family doc.. and she had all my hormone levels tested. She called me to come back. and said there was some things that were low. So she put me on metformin. 500 mg in am and in pm. I am finding that if i dont eat ENOUGH .. and DONT HAVE MILK with it... i get bad stomache cramps and sometimes like heart burn. I also have the extremely loose stools. Was just wondering if it will GET BETTER ... or will just be something i have to deal with.

Sarah it does get better., It just takes a little time for the body to adjust.

I do have a question though if you don't mind answering it, Did your doctor do an ultra sound of your ovaries and uterus. My ob-gyn is Dr Mayo and he is like top notch and he's says that blood work isn't enough to go on, you need that ultra sound done more or less to prove the theory to be correct.
I also take Spiroton 100mg 2 times a day with my metformin and this is also for the pcos. I have only had one attack since starting treatment and the birth control is keeping me normal so i'm not missing 6-8 months at a time or have 40 day periods.
Good Luck girl, hope it gets easier for you.

What is an attack?

I suspect that I have PCOS as well, I was being seen by a doctor when I was younger who did ultrasound and all kinds of tests, as I had a lot of the PCOS symptoms, but she concluded I had a tilted uterus and put me on Nuva-ring so I would have a regular period and recieve the same dose of birth control every day to control the abnormal periods. I get cramping all month long and my period is still irregular even with the birth control (no period at all in Jan or Feb- so far I'm on day 2) but when i bring it up to my pcp am told that at my weight fertility issues are normal and I should not expect to have regular periods.

My family doctor has reffered me to OBGYN... So my guess is he will do more testing. I DONT KNOW. Are you in the weight wise program?

I am in the program and have been since July.

Chance- when i say attack I mean severe abdominal pain with vomiting. I can't stand, sit and if I try to walk i'm buckled over in pain. My right ovary is the worst and that is the side i normally get pain in. In june i spent 4 days in the hospital hooked up to i.v. because i was so dyhdrated from the vomiting and on high dose morphine, and even with the morphine if I moved I could feel pain. I've had appendix removed and in comparison this pain is worst.
