Hello all,

I had RNY surgery with Dr. Nohr in Alberta in March 2008, quite satisfied with him and very happy with the surgery (lost over 130 lbs).  The only problem was the waiting list was quite long.  My young niece is asking her family doctor for a referral for gastric bypass surgery, which surgeon would you recommend?

Hi Diane, I also had Nohr and had everything done within a year, once I had the consult appt. I called every monday for cancellations and then when I got my surgery date I also called every monday and was lucky to get in on a cancellation,   So it did not take long for me to get on, so if she wants Dr. Nohr then I suggest for her to keep calling, tell her good luck!!

Thanks Tina,
Great to hear the waiting list is cut significantly if you call for cancellations.  Is Dr Nohr tel # 403-502-8936?

Hi Diane,

Dr Nohr's phone number has changed. The new number is 403-580-4610. Hope your niece has luck with a cancellation. I'm currently on the call-back list for surgery. My surgery date is April 26, 2010.... my consult date was June 2, 2009.

Oh yeah.... forgot to mention.... Mondays and Thursdays are the days to call in for cancellations. I actually got my cancellation on the consult on a Wednesday though. hehehe I also called in almost everyday to see if there were cancellations.

And you're quite welcome for the new phone number.

Just wondering how your neice is just going to get a referral to a surgeon without going through any sort of program? it's a entire lifestyle change as you know and not quick fix surgery.
Just curious as I'm in Weight Wise in Edmonton and it's saving my life one step at a time.

Hello,
We do not have any lifestyle programs like that in Manitoba.  I had the surgery with Dr. Nohr and lost over 130 lbs.... the surgery was a tool to get my weight down, I am eating properly now... trying to exercise, be more active.... that is all we can expect from the surgery.  In Manitoba, we can participate in a wellness assessment at a hospital program but we have to pay for it... quite expensive...

our health care system is not fair for single, lower income or elderly on limited income....  my niece is a single parent on limited income.  She has high blood pressure and high cholesterol and is under 30 yrs old.... she could use all the help that she can get.

Thanks for asking...
Diane
