Hi everyone,

I was just hoping someone could link me to any information about Alberta Health and what exactly is covered in regards to the various types of bariatric surgery.

I moved here from Ontario and I know that full bypass is covered there, I am wondering if it is the same here. I have already heard that Lap-band is covered, but I dont know where to get further information about this and I find the Alberta website less than helpful.

Thanks in Advance!

Given you are in GP--your nearest center is Edmonton Weight Wise...here is the link http://www.capitalhealth.ca/EspeciallyFor/WeightWise/default .htm

here are the FAQs
http://www.capitalhealth.ca/EspeciallyFor/WeightWise/FAQ/def ault

here is the form your doc needs to fill out:

All of the surgeries are covered at the clinic and the sleeve, bypass, and lapband is included.

Good luck to you

My understanding about lapband in Alberta, is that it is available in Calgary, but only if you're a Calgary health region resident, and even then, they are only allowed 50 residents per year.  The Weight Wise clinic in Edmonton, apparently does different types of bariatric surgery, but a long waiting list, and rigourous and long pre-qualifying regime.

Many people in Alberta and Saskatchewan are going out of country to Mexico for Lapband and for Sleeve Gastrectomy.  I myself had lapband done there 5 years ago.  I'd be happy to give you more info about either procedure, if you email me at [email protected].

Good luck.

I went to my family doctor and asked to get referred to Doctor Nohr,  the whole process took 3 1/2 years, but worth it.
