Look the first step is not o get frustrated. I have losing/gaining weight for over 10 yrs. I started it again 3 months ago and just with correct diet/excersice I am 40 lbs lighter today. I can do a custom diet program + excersice program for you if you llike.

Hi there,

I was in the same position as you are ... truthfully what I did was gain those extra pounds ... I ate more than I usually would and did as little as possible - not the solution for everyone but it worked for me ... I ended up at exactly 40 BMI and was approved for a gastric bypass with Dr. Nohr ... two years later I'm a size 8 ...

Is there a reason you want the band?  I ask because it seems to have a lot more problems associated with it long term ... and you have a surgeon right in Medicine Hat/Brooks that does the GB ...

Anyway, that 's my 2 cents  :-)

Hi. I am glad to hear about some one who had the bypass in Canada.I am over 50 years old so Dr. Hohr won't do me . I am going to Arizona and getting it done in Oct.  How did yu make out?  Any problems? and did AHCIIC pay for it?  Thanks      Edyie in Okotoks

Hmmm ... I didn't know that Dr. Nohr won't operate on anyone over 50 years old (I was 39) ... that seems a bit unfair ...

I have absolutely no complaints about my surgery or results ... I have become lactose intolerant and I do dump on some sugars but I can eat pretty much anything ... just a lot less ... I lost all of my weight with very little effort and now, at two years out, I have gained about 10 lbs back ... I'm now doing my best to be more active ... having the gastric bypass was the best thing I could have ever done for myself ...

Alberta Health Care covered everything ... my only cost was the gas to drive to Medicine Hat from Calgary ...

Good luck to you and let me know if I can give you any more info ...

Hi Leanne,

First, I would like to say congratulations!

I too am in Calgary, and looking at having GBP.  How were you able to get in with Dr. Nohr, and how long did it take from the initial consultation until surgery?
Did you need you family DR to refer you?

Hi there,

Sorry to take so long to reply but I don't visit OH very often anymore ...

I had my family doctor submit a referral to Dr. Nohr ... it took about a year from the time of my referral to the time of my surgery ... I think his waiting list is even longer now though ... it sucks that there are so few surgeons in Alberta performing the gastric bypass ...

Hi -

I also live in Brooks and was so excited to see your post on here.  I was banded on July 13/o8.  If you would like to get a hold of me I could let you know what info I have discovered on this journey.  We could possibly met for coffee - maybe I already know you.

Leanne,

How often did you/do you have to drive to Medicine Hat prior to and after the surgery? It seems my best bets are to go with either Dr. Nohr or Dr. Ferris in Red Deer.
