Kelly. Start by contacting your provincial health plan and ask for their out of country committee. Good luck . I am trying to get funding in Alberta and my case will be heard at the end of July...wish me luck too. Edith

I got started by getting hold of the out of country committee in Alberta and they sent me a letter saying what I would need to get for information. I also got my doctor and my endocrinologists to sn3ed letter stating that they felt the surgery was medically necessary for me to have some quality of life in the future, They also had to send copies of my blood work etc. I also told them what diets I had tried etc . Alberta won't accept letters from doctors outside Canada so my surgeon is unable to help me get funding at this time. Hope yours can Kelly. It has been a long and frustrating process so far. After trying to get the lap band here in Calgary for over two years and then being told (with 100's of others ) that they won't be doing anymore that are paid for by the government I was really discouraged. Then I went to a couple of information sessions at different places in Arizona and was really impressedwith Dr. Blackstone so decided to have an intake session with the idea of lap band in mind. After talking to the nurse practioner, dietician and psychologist, they all felt the I would benefit more from the bypass surgery so I am pusuing that. It is more costly, but if it will be more effective for me I think it is worth it. I am going to Arizona because the surgeon her who does it won't take patients over 50 ( I am 58) and it is a three year wait just to see him , then another year or so to get surgery....I don't have that kind of time at my age. Wish I had know about this years ago!! When it comes right down to it , I really hope they will fund me, but if I have to get a loan I will do it ...this is too important for me to give up because our health system doesn't recognize morbid obesity as a disease yet. Hi Kelly, I tried to get out of country approval to attend his clininc. I did alot of research into his backgound before I made the inquiry. His background is very impressive. I also spoke with him and he was very helpful. However, here in Alberta thye didn't think I had exhausted all the local resources enven though I have been on the infamous "lists" for FIVE years. Good luck. Lois

I only know his name from the Ontario board where he sort of has some bad associations. Two patients of the Ontario board had him and died within a month of each other. Since then not too many people have gone to dr. goodman.
