I am considering/hoping for RNY surgery. I have heard that Dr. Birch is excellent. Food has been my coping mechanism, I am wondering what it is like not having that after surgery? What are the positive coping changes ppl have made? Thank you Cam

Hello Cam, I had the band done 2 years ago. I can't comment on Dr. Birch as I went to Mexico to have my band done. I have heard good and bad about the RNY. Personally, I think the band is better. It's not as invasive and you still get your nutrients. Whatever you decide, make sure you do LOTS of research. Pros and Cons of both. When I had the band done, I had to change my eating habits. It's all a process. Nothing is easy and nothing is a quick fix. I can't continue to eat chocolate and cakes, etc. etc. and expect to loose weight. For the first while you can cheat and get away with this and that but then when it comes down to the last lets say 25-40 lbs lbs, (if you are very heavy) they wont move. You do have to try using other things to move you away from food. I bought a book called Cognative therapy for dummies. (Chapters). It's good. Also you may want to see a phsychologists to find out whats deep down inside. Sometimes we're just plain old bored and stuck in a rut. Other times we are running or hiding from something. Anger is another reason we eat. Sad is another. We all go through these different emotions as humans. If we feel inadiquite or less than, this is another reason. What ever the reason, we need to find a different fix. Mine eventually came to be that I got sick. I can't eat the chocolate, deep fried stuff, junk food, sweets. I have chronic reflux. I have had to change my way of eating and guess what? You can find stuff that tastes just as good as the high fat and damaging food. You just have to find a few good recipes and substitutions and off you go. It's all a process. What we think is so so good, makes us feel like crap after. I try to eat healthy now. I do it for my inside body not so much the outside any more. I do it because I like myself better now and I want to be good to myself. I hope this helps. Good luck with it all. L.S
