Moving To Edmonton!
Hey, all!
I am American, but my boyfriend Brian is Canadian and we're moving to Edmonton in March 2008! That's where he's from originally, so we're pretty excited.
Currently we're living in Phoenix, AZ.
By the way, I am 11 months post-op - I had the Duodenal Switch with Biliopancreatic Diverstion in January 2007. I have lost 146 pounds and hope to lose about 30 more.
Hello to all you Canadians - I hope to learn more about you all!
Congratulations on your weight loss - you have done fantastic. I hope you enjoy Edmonton. You will be arriving in the spring (I hope) - it's really cold today (ha ha). It is a great city - the city of champions and the city of festivals. If you love music and outdoor festivals you're coming to the right place. The summers are great.
By the way one of local hospitals has a great baractic program one of the surgeons is the top laparscopic surgeons in Canada and the other is the chief of surgery in the hospital. They are very dedicated to this program and other hospitals are looking to them to make their programs like theirs. When you are a patient of theirs you are for life. They do complete follow-up with you. Some other docs in Alberta or Canada do the surgeries but there is just immediate post op follow-up then you are on your own. Not these Edmonton folks.
I had a visit yesterday and was told that in about 5 years there is a plan for a full baractric hospital - so the program will be expanding quite a bit.
We also have a local on-line support group and this group also meets in person once a month right now. If you are interested let me know.

HI and welcome to alberta!
I had GBS at the Royal alexandra Hospital in edmonton , two years ago. They have a fabulous bariatric team. Dr's Davey and Birch are the best in Canada, if not North America. They do take care of you for life. I still see them whenever I need to, and mostly I see my dietitian, who is beyond fabulous. They also help you with psychological needs, or social work requirements, etc. They have a support group you might check into. I don't belong because I live a couple of hours out of Edmonton,so I can't really participate, but they are a great bunch. Just check at the Bariatric Clinic at the Royal Alexandra when you get here.
Yeah, and buy a toque, lol...I hope we can offer you a nice hot summer, and I hope you like Edmonton. I don't live there, but I love it everytime I go. It is one of the great unsung cities of the planet - it is stunningly beautiful, and full of art, theatre, culture, music. One of the oldest jazz clubs on the continent. The second largest Fringe Theatre festiva on Earth. A lot of really really good theatre, too. Oh yeah, and there's hockey if you're into that, I'm not...
Anyway, Welcome.
Billie
