pre-op diets differ?
I have been creeping around looking at other peoples posts regarding the pre-op diet. I am curious because apparently there are different pre-op diets (probably dependent on the physician's preference and/or BMI). I am 40 BMI and Dr. Almanza.
I am on mostly clear liquids, sugar free juice, yogurt and jello. No solids whatsoever. The jello helps me feel like I'm "eating" something. I am dying for something different, especially since I know I'll be so limited after surgery. At this point, chicken noodle soup sounds so yummy. I guess that it's the knowing that I'm not supposed to have it thats driving me nuts.
I tried a muscle milk protein shake yesterday. OMG... that has to be the grossest thing I've ever had. ick ick ick.

Mine is strictly protein shakes by Bariatric Advantage. Have been on them 8 days and have 4 days to go. Clear fluids the day before surgery, plus the lovely bottle of magnesium calcite I have to drink down -- not looking forward to that one bit!
Not a big fan of the protein shakes, but figure I can bite the bullet and get them down for the end result.

OUR DR. DOESN'T REQUIRE MUCH OF A PREOP DIET -- OURS (ME & HUBBY'S) IS JUST BREAKFAST ON THE 27TH WHICH IS THE DAY BEFORE OUR SURGERY ON THE 28TH. THEN THE REST OF THE DAY ON THE 27TH IS LIQUIDS UNTIL MIDNIGHT, THEN IT'S NOTHING AT ALL. I DON'T KNOW WHY MY DR. IS SO DIFFERENT...BUT THAT'S WHAT WE WAS INSTRUCTED TO DO. WHICH I'M GLAD...I JUST WONDER WHY EACH DR'S DIETS ARE SO DIFFERENT....ANY INFO?
Yes, they're all very different. My doctor uses the HMR 500 program for pre-op. I get 5 packets per day; mostly shakes (they come in chocolate and vanilla), but there's also a chicken soup option (basically broth), and the chocolate made with ho****er is decent hot chocolate. No food at all; I'm allowed to make them with skim or 1% milk if I want, and I can add half a banana or a few berries just for flavor. I'm SO sick of it! I'm actually looking forward to the post-op liquid diet when I can have different types of broth, sf jello, and try different types of protein drinks!
They usually have people do it for 2 weeks, but I didn't do so well at my pre-op weight loss, so they put me on it for 3.

Yes the pre op diets differ depending on the surgeon, your starting bmi, and how likely you are to have a swollen liver due to fatty liver. If your liver is fat it makes the surgery harder for the surgeon and more dangerous for you. I was on protien shakes for 10 days with only a bowl of salad ( without the junk on it) or a bowl of veggies, lol I didnt even get meat or anythng.
