How much will I probably loose on Pre-Op Diet? Did you loose any weight if so how much?
Hi OH Fam!
Wanted to know if anyone lost a great deal of weight during pre-op diet? I am on a 20 carb a day diet with eating only meat, green veggies and cheese till 12/30 I believe. I was told that my diet needed to start 2 weeks before surgery and surgery is on the 30th of Decemeber. I have so far lost 5 pounds but feel bloaded after I eating meat. Is this natural? Also what is the reason for pre-op diet beside loosing some weight before surgery? Just asking...im curious

Allen! Thanks for the blinkie!
Dr. Macik told me that the low carb diet is to shrink the liver. It is the largest organ he has to work around (I think he has to actually lift it to get to the stomach). I have lost about 7-8 pounds since the 4th. It could have been more, but I had to have a few extra carbs to combat a few low blood sugars this week.

I was on a pre-op diet for six weeks prior to surgery. I was required to lose 10% of my body weight before surgery. If 10% is not lost they could have cancelled my surgery. Anyhow, that was about 30 pounds for me and I did it. These are the reasons I was given:
1) It shrinks your liver (which lies ontop of your stomach) making surgery safer.
2) It shows your committment to the lifelong change that's about to happen.
3) My pre-op diet included the Optifit program which is food I had to buy. This food gave me all the vitamins and minerals I needed. SO this pumps you up with vitamins and gets you as healthy as you can be prior to surgery. This allows for quicker healing.
As far as how much are you going to lose? It depends on so much there's no real way to calculate that unless you want to get technical....
1) How many calories does it take for you to maintain your current weight?
2) We know that 3,500 calories = 1 pound.
3) How many calories will you be consuming on your pre-op diet?
4) How many days will you be on the diet?
5) How many calories will you be burning from exercise?
For example: When I started out it took nearly 3,000 calories to maintain my weight. That's a LOT! This was calculated by a breathing test and also a BODPOD to measure my body composition. I was put on a 900-1000 calorie diet for six weeks. I was also required to do strength training twice per week. This all calculates out to 30 pound of weight loss.
That was probably more info than you wanted! LOL Good luck, you can do it!

I was on 10 days of nothing but skim milk and Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks. I lost 13 lbs for surgery. At the time, I thought it was awful. Now 9 days post op, it sounds like heaven, after a week of clear liquids only! Good luck to you!

I had to do the 1% milk and SF Carnation Instant Breakfast 6 times a day as well as 48 oz. of clear liquids...preferably water...no caffeine for one week pre-op.
I lost 11 pounds.
I had surgery on Dec. 9th and have now lost a total of 23 pounds. I need to go figure out how to make one of those wt. loss tickers! :-)
