I did speak with my aunt this evening who knows about this stuff due to her job.  She said that the gases can take up to two weeks to dissipate and usually is at least 10 days.  She said that the gases they use to pump you up during surgery have to be processed through the cells in your body so it takes longer.  Some of it does make it into the gut, hence the rumbling, but most goes through cells.

I have to say that the gas that I did pass was accompanied by the oh so very lovely diarrhea.  You know the kind you don't know is there.  FOrtunately, I was warned by a friend who'd had the surgery and didn't pass any gas except over the toilet!  lol

So.. I guess I'm PREGO feeling for the next week to 10 days.  Fun times were had by all.

Let's all keep walking and eventually the gas will be gone.

I have to drink 1 oz of liquids every 10 minutes aiming for 3-4 oz of protein per hour.  I am supposed to stop when I feel full.  I am not supposed to have anything but protein drinks and clear liquids for the time being.   This is for 2 weeks.  Nothing but LC protein drinks, milk, soy milk for protein sources.  I was surprised that some are trying soft foods already, so soon after surgery.

I was just cleared for soft foods yesterday.  My doc says I can have cottage cheese, mash potatos, yogurt, hot cereals, eggs and anything with the egg consistency.  I just had some boiled shrimp and it was so good.  I chew everything to mush.  I also got some refried beans, tuna and canned chicken to make salads with.

At my one week check I was up one pound from the morning of surgery. 5 days later I had lost 9LBS.  Don't freak, it will come off. I was retaining water big time.

I started pureed stage on Christmas. I really like soups like split pea w/ ham & bacon or bean & bacon pureed. They're nice and thick and have some good protein and fiber.   Try here for ideas:

I'm making the baked riccota recipe tonight.  I'm also going to try making instant mashed potatos with milk instead of water and add a little powdered milk or unflavored protein powder to up the protein.  Just had some FF refried beans with alittle melted cheese today, that was good.

I had my bypass surgery on December 22 and got home the 24th early evening. Iam in pain...a lot of pain. I try to keep from taking too pany of the OxyCodine they gave me but I am having to. I have two drains in (a jackson pratt) and another small one. I know this is major surgery but I didn't expect to be in this much pain.
The back pain for me is there but I can tell its from the way I am sitting, laying and walking.
The gas is there for me and Gas X strips are my new bestfriends.
My tummy is so bloated and tender.
Is anyone else surprised at the pain? It was sharp pains for me but now it's like a burning. I get my drains out on tuesday so  I am praying that helps with the pain...ugh!

I got home on December 24th from having bypass on Dec 22. The first two days home Gas X strips were a god send. I feel like it dealt with all of my gas...everything calmed down after I used them. Don't be afraid to try them and see if it works for you. The shoulder pain hasn't been bad at all for me...a little here and there. Good luck to you.
