Topic: RE: Finally!! Feeling the restriction I am supposed to feel!
It's so funny to me how different doctor's have different requirements for the same surgery.  My doctor says that once on the puree stage the I am to have 3 meals a day with the possiblity of a snack.  This will be for the remainder of my life.  He (and my nutrionist too) has found (and I believe he said research is being to support) that post WLS patients who "graze" with smaller meals all day tend to gain the weight back at nearly the same rate as those who start drinking with their meals again.  He described it to me as never really allowing the pouch to "recognize" that it is truly full.  I think that I'll be looking into both sides of this argument a great deal more.  I tend to trust my doctor as he has no leaks and no deaths after 6,000+ surgeries, but why shouldn't I find out more to be sure!?

I still don't know how I'm going to manage all the liquids for the rest of my life.  It's rather hard to teach middle schoolers while you're sip, sip, sipping!  lol

Topic: Freezing all the time now!!!
Okay, I have NEVER been one who is cold.  I'm always the one wanting the A/C turned up and the heat turned down.  Normally, I have my heat set at 63 in the winter and the A/C at about 72 in the summer.  My  heat is now at 73 and I am still absolutely freezing!  When staying with my folks last week right after my surgery I thought I'd never be warm again.  Dad had the heat set at 67 and my fingers were like ice cubes.  I took a 20 minute HOT shower one morning and just barely got the warmth back into them.

I just wondered if anyone else is having this problem.  I mean.. could it be from all the liquids being relatively cool when I drink them?  Is it directly related to the surgery?  I wasn't cold in the hospital where I was eating ice chips but I also don't know what they had the heat set at.

Any thoughts from my fellow losers out there??

Thanks
Julie

My nutritionist says that you can stretch your pouch eating more than half a cup at meal time.  And no eating in between meals (grazing).  Also, just liquids for the first two weeks.  Are you getting all of your water in?  This will help you to feel full.  After two weeks you can add soft, pureed food.  Also, you are supposed to always start off your meal with protein FIRST.  Oatmeal is for down the road.  She said to eat slowly and with a smaller size (baby) spoon.  The slower you eat, the sooner you will feel full.  I hope this helps.

You sure are correct about doctor's being so different.  I've thought that when I've read these posts.   My doctor is self-admittedly very cautious.  I imagine that is why he has a record of more than 6,000 surgeries and not a single leak or death as a result.  Those are the reasons I went with him over other doctors in our area and the same reasons will make me listen to him.

He explained it to me before I left the hospital.  He stated that all of our insides are swollen.  Everything.  They've been poked, prodded, cut, stapled, the whole nine yards.  He said we'd feel the pain of the muscles healing and the stitches in those areas but that the actual organs would not likely give us "pain" unless there's a problem.  With the swelling in the stomach last for up to six weeks, he says absolutely no pills or anything thicker than runny applesauce for that amount of time.  It sucks.. boy oh boy does it suck and I have been sorely tempted to cheat.  Okay.. I have cheated... lol  But not a lot of cheating!

Good luck with your lovely BM situation going the other way.  That was how mine started.  Now, I'm not really going but I'm not constipated either.  I can't imagine how I could be constipated when all I have is liquids.  What solids are there to process?  LOL

Have a stellar day!

sheesh, thats more expensive than the actigall. I was wondering the same thing about why they just don't remove the gallbladder, it would make things alot easier - and cheaper when it comes to buying medicine.

Meet the Surgeon Aug 1, 2011 .... hopefully the surgeons office is right and everything will go fast and I'll have surgery later this month.

Didn't your doctor give you guidelines as to how much food you should be having at this time?  My dietician is very clear on types of foods and quantities for the first two weeks after surgery.  I am sure when I get my next stage of the diet, with the soft and pureed foods, quantities will be spelled out very strictly again.

I would worry about stretching out the pouch with so much food after surgery.

You might want to check with your doctor about what you have been eating.

I had surgery a week ago and have lost the 10 pounds I gained at the hospital and another 6.6 pounds on top of that.

You can't rely solely on the surgery to give you control.  You need to learn to exercise control yourself too.

Good luck.

Topic: RE: Finally!! Feeling the restriction I am supposed to feel!
I haven't felt hungry enough for a lot of liquid at a time except when I was at the hospital sipping water.  At home, my instructions are to have no more than 1 oz every 10 minutes and no more than 6 oz per hour.  For the first two days, I could manage 2 oz of protein drink and 2 oz of water per hour.  I was not getting enough protein that way.  I made a more concentrated protein drink and sipped four of those per hour and finally got 68g of protein in and 50 oz of liquids.  I have been sipping my broth from a cup or bowl instead of using a spoon to eat it.

My doctor told me to expect to intake 1/2 cup per meal (6x's a day) for the rest of my life.

Anyway, down to 256.8 today, the day of surgery, a week ago, I was 263.4, so that's down 6.6 net pounds, but really down 16.6 pounds, as I had gained 10 pounds at the hospital.

No, I really wasn't feeling much of a restriction. I felt kind of hollow. I know I could have eaten a lot more than I was because I was still hungry.
Tonight, all of that changed. It was like my new little tummy woke up and let me know what was what .
Many people had told me it would happen but I didn't believe it.
Wait a few days, I guarantee it will happen to you too.
Hang in, when it wakes up you will know it!

Good luck!!

Topic: RE: Too much food?? Where's the restriction?
I think it really all depends on the foods. I was feeling like I could eat too much too. I could down more than a cup of a protein shake, jello, cottage cheese etc. Tonight I had a few bites of apple (cheating) and it must have been enough to stick everything up behind it. I followed it with my protein drink (about a cup) and was in so much pain from being too full!

I have decided I am not really trying to make any decisions for at least the first 4 weeks. I read so many different reactions on here, there is always someone like you though. Some are full/some are hungry, pain, no pain etc. I figure I won't have a good idea on swelling, weight loss, hunger, dumping or anything else for the first month, until then my body is so busy trying to recover the rest is subject to change.

I wouldn't get too discouraged though, while there are lots of differences, it does seem like everyone has a good 6 month run or so. Hang in there!

I'm almost 2 weeks out and am concerned that I'm able to eat so much (relatively speaking, of course!).  I can eat a whole cup of oatmeal...a whole can of soup....6 oz of yogurt, etc.  It seems like everyone else is stuffed after 2 tablespoons.  I have to stop myself from eating more -- because I KNOW I'm not supposed to be eating more than a cup of oatmeal!  Also, not surprisinly, I've only lost 6 lbs since 12/17 surgery date.
