are you still on this medication?

I thought by now that I would be off of the prilosec that I was put on right after surgery.  I was first on Nexium but since it was so expensive and my insurance wouldn't cover it, they changed it to Prilosec.  If I don't take it I have problems eating.  It actually hurts as it goes into the pouch.  Are you all still on either of these meds?

I was just put back on Nexium last week, i called with a complaint of having heart burn, i never had it before surgery but man was my stomach ate up by ulcers. so they said the nexium should help, they also said avoid caffeine. i started a bad habit, since i'm not longer allowed soda i started to drink unsweet tea with splenda, every day i have about two tall boy glasses full of tea.
so now my pouch is a bit unhappy with me.. some patinet have to take it for a while after surgery and others have to take it forever, just depends i guess... i'm sorry i i guess i didn't answer why, i guess because our pouches are sensitive to things we subject them to during our trail and error phase...
I hope yours gets better soon.. i've never had heart burn and this SUCKS...
take care

Hey Sandra. Well I took the Nexium for 3 months and as soon as Doctor miles took me off of it I ended up with a really bad ulcer. I now take it for life. But I dont know why you would still be on it. Maybe give "good ole" Helen ( use of term was very loose! ) a call and ask her.

Good Luck

well, I did stop it for about 2 wks and I couldn't eat anything.  I had to go back on a soft diet.  It seems that ithe meds are keeping swelling down and if I stop taking it everything I eat that or drink hurts as it enters my pouch.  I don't know when I will be able to get off of it but I am almost afraid to stop taking it since I had such a negative experience the last time.  Maybe by the time I am 6 months out I will try again.

I was on Priolsec before surgery and haven't gone off.  I was under the impression that with gastric bypass, heartburn goes away for people who had it pre-op.  I'm sort of nervous to try going off, heartburn stinks!

I never did have heartburn.  I would hate that too.  I did go off of the medication but it hurt to eat or drink so I am back on for a bit.  No burning, just pain as the food passed into my stomach/pouch.  ugh

For some reason I thought the Prilosec was for life.  Maybe I am wrong, but I plan on staying on it until my doctor tells me differently.  I use the generic version - Omaprazole (sp?) - I haven't had any stomach burning feelings at all.
