Tortilla chips, pizza, bread, crackers.....

Am I the only person not trying this kind of stuff?

I am in no way putting any of you down that are, but in all honesty are we supposed to be eating that kind of stuff? I don't have a nut so I am doing this kinda on my own but I thought we were supposed to avoid those kinds of foods.

Help, I am so confused!

Don't try that kind of stuff.  My NUT's materials say to particularly avoid crunchy snack foods because they go down easily and are packed with empty calories; just because you can eat them doesn't mean you should. 

If you're going to eat very small quantities, it makes sense that you would choose the most healthful foods available, and none of the listed items fits the bill.  That said, I'm allowed one ounce of 'starch' foods each day, and of that range of foods, I will sometimes choose pasta or potato or toast when I know I shouldn't. 

Some things I find I'm okay with that give me the crunch I want are melba toast and celery.

Sometimes you "choose the pasta, potato or toast".. see I haven't tried any of these.. maybe I am just being a chicken or maybe it is best I don't even consider them.

If you can avoid, do so. I have tried some of these same foods and now I have to ween myself off of them. Thank God it's not hard resisting these foods, but If I continue I will be now better off then I was better the surgery.  Stay focus you're doing great if your doing without them.

Hey,

My comment would be keep doing wat ur doing.

The nutritional book that I was given bby the nut does list some "snack foods" that are acceptable, but it says to eat small quantities and only wen u have met ur daily nut requirements. Because it is empty calories. I try to avoid them but.........

I admit I have indulged in the decadent(sp) crunchy salty stuff. Not in large quantities, but as added carbs to balance out my my blood sugar. Keep getting these strange headaches if I am low on carbs. They go away as soon as I eat.

I think that getting back to eating those kinds of foods if one doesn't  have too will keep one's weight loss slowed. Just brings back bad habits.

Just my opinion. but as Sargeant Schultz said it the sit-com "Hogan's Heroes" I know nussing"

I guess I will just keep on trying to be a good girl (ha ha) and stay on course but damn I would love me a ham samich (spelling intentional) with some doritos on the side right about now!!

I know what you mean. I was cravin a ham sanich with real mayo slathered on there the other day but that passed. I have had fat free pretzels when I was in a pinch when I was at the hospital when my hubby was in there and that was the only decent thing to choose from. I know if I started eating nuts, and all those other bad things you mentioned I would graze on them everytime I passed them so I aint gonna go there. Fat free or low fat saltine crackers are ok and they  have helped me especially if I am feeling  nausea. My Mom always said that the sodium in them settles your stomach. It works for me.
If we don’t put our efforts into creating what we want, then we have to put our efforts into coping with what we get!

I am of the mentality that low carb is best during our rapid WL window from what I have learned from those that have gone down this road before me. Protein first is everyone's rule so why take chances.

Some times we may need a little something else, I have definitely been there on my journey already, too. One Pringles chip and I'm good though.

No pizza for me. I just can't do it. The crust part is what scares me. That will balloon up and you could face an issue of getting stuck, etc. I will however, eat the toppings (cheese & meat) off of 1 slice if my family is having pizza for dinner. But no crust!

Bread? Nope, have not had that since way before surgery. Will not consider trying it unless it's low carb/high protein either and probably not for several more months.

Crackers? I have had some mini saltines here and there due to nausea. The mush easily and I have been able to tolerate them, but I do not eat them every day or even every week. Only when I feel extremely nauseated and nothing else seems to work.

Do what feels right to you, but definitely keep your focus on protein first! You're doing great!!!

I avoid those things too. The last thing I want to get in the habit of is eating carbs, which just take me back to old habits. Plus, I have heard so many awful things about bread getting stuck, pasta and rice expanding in your pouch, etc... who wants the discomfort that comes along with that?

Perhaps folks who are struggling with food issues still have some psychological work to do regarding their relationship with food. Thankfully, my insurance required clients to do pre-op counseling to resolve emotional eating issues, and it has helped me so much!

Well, in terms of "supposed" to be eating it....my doc told me I was now free to eat everything (obviously in moderation). I never had a problem with "junk" food. I was, and still am an extremely healthy eater. My problem was with volume. Thankfully, my surgery has prevented me from eating the amounts I used to and I am using this time to deal w/ the why's of overeating while I lose. That said, I do not intend to prohibit myself from living like everyone else. I was at a kid's bday party where pizza was served for lunch. I ate half a slice and was satisfied with it. For me, I think to cut any one thing out completely is just asking to feel deprived. Obviously if someone feels that 1/2 a slice of pizza will send them over the edge into a carb frenzy, by all means, steer clear. Just my two cents :-)
