Finally!! Feeling the restriction I am supposed to feel!
Were you not feeling the restriction earlier? The reason I ask is that I had RNY on 12/17 and compared to everyone else, it seems like I can eat too much. I can eat a whole cup of oatmeal in the morning....a whole can of soup, etc. I'm worried that it's not working for me! Leave it to me to be the one person who doesn't lose weight after gastric bypass! I've only lost 6 lbs, too!
No, I really wasn't feeling much of a restriction. I felt kind of hollow. I know I could have eaten a lot more than I was because I was still hungry.
Tonight, all of that changed. It was like my new little tummy woke up and let me know what was what .
Many people had told me it would happen but I didn't believe it.
Wait a few days, I guarantee it will happen to you too.
Hang in, when it wakes up you will know it!
Good luck!!

I haven't felt hungry enough for a lot of liquid at a time except when I was at the hospital sipping water. At home, my instructions are to have no more than 1 oz every 10 minutes and no more than 6 oz per hour. For the first two days, I could manage 2 oz of protein drink and 2 oz of water per hour. I was not getting enough protein that way. I made a more concentrated protein drink and sipped four of those per hour and finally got 68g of protein in and 50 oz of liquids. I have been sipping my broth from a cup or bowl instead of using a spoon to eat it.
My doctor told me to expect to intake 1/2 cup per meal (6x's a day) for the rest of my life.
Anyway, down to 256.8 today, the day of surgery, a week ago, I was 263.4, so that's down 6.6 net pounds, but really down 16.6 pounds, as I had gained 10 pounds at the hospital.

It's so funny to me how different doctor's have different requirements for the same surgery. My doctor says that once on the puree stage the I am to have 3 meals a day with the possiblity of a snack. This will be for the remainder of my life. He (and my nutrionist too) has found (and I believe he said research is being to support) that post WLS patients who "graze" with smaller meals all day tend to gain the weight back at nearly the same rate as those who start drinking with their meals again. He described it to me as never really allowing the pouch to "recognize" that it is truly full. I think that I'll be looking into both sides of this argument a great deal more. I tend to trust my doctor as he has no leaks and no deaths after 6,000+ surgeries, but why shouldn't I find out more to be sure!?
I still don't know how I'm going to manage all the liquids for the rest of my life. It's rather hard to teach middle schoolers while you're sip, sip, sipping! lol

I'm SO glad you posted this. I'm 1 week post op now and feel like I could always be eating if I let myself. How did you "restriction" feel? I've heard so many possibilities. I'm still try to decipher all the new sounds and symptoms that my guts has invented since the surgery. It's like trying to learn Greek or something! lol
I'm doing really well, I think. I had prepared myself for a MUCH worse recovery than what I've had. All things considered, it's been relatively easy. I still tire VERY quickly and have pain at night when I'm trying to sleep. I did have one weird thing at "dinner" tonight. I was done "eating" and sitting with my family. All of the sudden I got this feeling of being sliced open on my lower left side. I gasped and sat up really straight. It passed very quickly and hasn't happened since. So, I'm not sure what it was all about. I hadn't eaten anything new, so I just don' t know. It did freak me out though!
My lack of issues during recovery has me feeling like maybe there wasn't really enough stomach "taken away". I hope that I'm not headed for another lifetime of overeating. I'm going to take it slow, learn what my new pouch is telling me and try to follow all the recommendations of the doctor and my nutrionist. I also figure everyone here will keep me on track! lol
How about you? Are you back at home yet? Have you come up with any outstanding puree recipes? lol Please share if you do!!!

Funny -- I thought the same thing....my recovery has been so smooth, I can't help but wonder if he didn't do it right....made my pouch too big or something. I've only lost 6 lbs (and I'll be two weeks out on Wednesday). Does RNY ever NOT work? Maybe my body is supposed to be this big, even when eating so few calories. Leave it to me to be the one person in the world that doesn't lose weight after gastric bypass.
Hi Roacharama --
I asked you what kind of surgery you had in a different post, which I read before this one.
It does seem unusual that you can eat so much and not feel full. I'm only 1 week out and started my pureed phase today, but even after sipping a few oz. I feel full. I was able to eat 2 oz of cream of rice cereal on the full liquid phase and felt satisfied. Fullness is signaled for me by feeling bloated and on the way to being like I made my 5th trip to the buffet line! I'm getting that after just a few sips of liquid, whether its water or protein shake.
I strongly recommend you speak to your doctor asap about your concerns!
Cheryl
