Okay so I came home yesterday...
Tom! You're home! Great! How are you feeling???
Okay, the drain apparently is the personal choice of the surgeon...for the surgeons who do not use the drain, I have no idea what their alternative is!
So what it is...is...I have tubing coming out of one of my incisions (it's about the same kind of tubing as an iv line) and it is a few feet long and leads to a soft plastic drain...I compare it to looking like a grenade. So the liquid that your body is draining after surgery goes thru this tube and into the drain, and I have to empty it a few times a day. It is quite gross...
Not to mention, my friend had hers out yesterday, and she said there is a whole nother foot of this drain line inside of us! so not only is it gross, but it's going to hurt when they pull it out!!!

that does sound disgusting and I have seen a lot of gory things in my life but I think I would have to pass out if I saw one of them sticking out my side. not to mention, having to drain it a few times a day.
Ouch, double ouch!!!!
Good luck to you guys. I have some liq vicodin. I think you need it more than me.

Yeah, the JP Drain (Jackson-Pratt) drain is used to take the excess fluids that can build up from the surgery. So over time it will become less and less fluid, as it is constantly suctioning out.
I am suprised that they are making you maintain it, that sucks. The nurses were monitoring mine, and took mine out on my discharge from the hospital. The removal of the Drain was probably one of the worst feelings ever - not to scare anyone, but it feels very strange as the tubing slides out :( Brace yourselves when you have to have it done!

The drain i am told is to help tthe prevention of infection.
This is the 5th drain i have ever had and it is not a lot of fun having removed, but worth it i think. I've never had any infection or anything. This last one was the biggest tube, but probaly the easiest as it was removed after only4 days. They told me take a big breath and blow out when they pull. The nurse who did mine had also never done it before, and all was fine...take your pain meds a little befre they come todo it!
and REALLY concentrate on the blowing out...it reallt did help!
