surgery right before christmas

Hello, My sister in law is having gastric bypass on the 18th and is thinking that recovery will be no big deal and she will be able to attend christmas eve, christmas day and host her daughters suprise 13th bday just 9 days after surgery. I think this is a bad idea, I really want her to wait til January to have this surgery, I think this is an unfair time to have the surgery especially for her daughters who will need her during the holidays.......what do you all have to say about this......why are you all not waiting until after christmas?

I can't wait because my insurance is switching to a new plan that will not cover my surgery.

Your sister in law is a grown woman making her own choices. She has jumped through a lot of hoops to get a surgery scheduled. Please don't try to guilt her into waiting. Offer her support and help.

I have spent the last 8 months jumping through hoops for my insurance company.  I have dieted and been tested to death.  I am obese, tired all the time and in pain much of the time.  When the dr. office called with my date I took it without question.  I need this surgery and I need to get my life back.  Why would I WAIT until after Christmas to get started?  Call me selfish but this decision with ultimately make things so much better for my kids and DH.  They will get a more energetic and happy mom/wife.  Christmas comes every year, this surgery is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

That's why I'm not waiting.

I have to agree with everybody else! My lap RNY is tomorrow. Prior to scheduling I had hoped it would be after the Holiday's but once they call you there is nothing more exciting. Yes, the holidays will be difficult but my family is truly in support of my decision. We are going to start a new tradition by concentrate more on family and good times and less on food! There are limitations, but we are not confined to our bedrooms so we should be able to participate in all activites. This is the time your sisiter needs all of your support. Just think how wonderful things will be next holiday season!

I just don't know what the big deal of waiting 2 weeks would be, especially if you have so many big plans happening within a week of having the surgery.

I have to agree with what has been said here. I had my surgery postponed once already.
There is always a chance that something is going to come along and have it postponed again or cancelled altogether so ya kinda got to go for it when it presents itself.

on another note. I have 3 older kids and a 2 month old grandchld that I responsible for. I have sat down with them and explained about Christmas and what could go right or wrong.

And I am counting on a speedy recovery cuz I will be portraying Santa Christmas Eve. This is one time I am going to suck up the pain (if any) be the best Santa next to Tim Allen's "The Santa Clause"

Her health long-term is more important than her not being her best for one holiday.  I think it's UNFAIR to expect her to put it off for everyon else's convenience...

Also, another GOOD reason to have surgery around the holidays: paid time off work is already factored in.  And at least in my office, it's a slow-time of year, and therefore a good time to be out.

Good luck to your SIL.  Please don't try to guilt her for having surgery around the holidays; she won't need that.

 

Yes, I agree.  I had My surgery last Dec. 10 2007 and it was the best decision ever.  I was mostly prepared for Christmas before hand, so when Christmas came around, everything was so relaxed and wonderful.  I never  had the chance to eat one single Fresh delicious Christmas Cookie!  That was a great thing!
I would never change one thing about the way my surgery went and the timing.  It was perfect.

My family is very supportive of my surgery before Christmas. We are celebrating with my husband's family the Saturday after Christmas and then a few weeks later with my son and his family because they live 4 hours away. I too have been jumping thru hoops with doctors, insurance, testing, etc. I would have surgery on Christmas day if that was the day that I was scheduled. I am happy that I have a surgery date, that is all I want for Christmas!
