Question about Pre-Op Testing at the Hospital
My surgery is Wednesday 12/10 and i have to go to the hospital on Monday 12/8 for Pre-Admit Testing. I guess I was to excited when they scheduled my surgery I didn't ask what the pre-admit testing was about? Can someone tell me what they will be doing and will it be an all day event? I'm so excited about surgery and just wonder what else they could possibly be testing for since I'm schedule to admit 2 days later?
Thanks in advance

I hear you I felt the same way! The pre-op testing was very easy, but did take several hours, just because of the waiting. I had to have a pre-op esophogram. This is an x-ray that they take while you drink some lovely (blech) liquid while lying on your stomach to check out how your swallowing goes. You'll have another one about a week after the surgery, but that one is quicker and you are standing and only have to take a few sips. The other pre-op stuff was meeting with a nurse who took blood pressure, asked questions, had you fill out paperwork. You will probably also get some bloodwork done unless you had some very recently. They took an EKG. I also met very, very briefly with an anesthesiologist to discuss what meds you are on, what you can take pre-surgery and explain what they will be doing. So, plan on the whole morning being there, but it is no big deal.
Good luck!!!!
Good luck!!!!
My Pre-Op...... My regular dr wasn't available 12/05 so another dr did my pre-op. All she did was ask a few questions like do I have reflux.....do I get out of breath walking up two flights of stairs. Then she listened to my lungs, checked my throat (say AWWWW) asked if I had any trouble swollowing. Then she said she'll do Blood Work in case its needed. Then sent me home....... Now I'm not sure what was supose to be done, but I am concerned I may be sent home on day of surgery cause it wasn't the right pre-op exam. OH and she said my Blood Sugars look great and I laughed and said cause I can't eat anything, I'm on a liquid diet til day of surgery! LOL I am calling the WLS Team monday to make sure nothing else is needed
Looks like everyone's experiences are a little different. IN order to get the insurance clearance, I had to have a pulmonary function (lung) test, EKG and stress test and endoscopy / colonoscopy in advance. For my hospital pre-admission testing, they took some blood, did another EKG (because the first one I had was 1 week too long ago - had to be within 3 months) and an ultrasound of my legs to test for DVT or blood clots. Plus, of course, the paperwork. NOthing at all painful and I was almost in and out. The worst part of the ideal for me, I think, was preparing for the colonoscopy!!!
Revision on 01/25/13
Pre-op is different for everyone, depending on your current health issues, and your physician.
I have really no health issues, and only had to have lab work, chest xray, EKG, and a physical examination. I did mine all as outpatient, not a the hospital, so it was a breeze. Good luck with your surgery, mine is the 12th. See you on the Bench!!!!
