ok so I went to the doctors and they told me I dont have to drink protein shakes and protein bars.........whats up with that, how am I supposed to get 60grams in? They said I should be getting my protein from food but I know there is no way that will happen. Anyone have an opinion?

All Drs have different protocols when it comes to shakes and bars. I track my food on Daily Plate, and with what I eat there is no way for me to make my protein amount every day. I do drink shakes ocassionally for breakfast or between meals. I add protein powder to soups, puddings, jello, hot cereal, yogurt. I use protein bars when I am at work, and want something chocolate....no more vending machine. I also carry a protein bar in my purse for that just in case situation. My thought is that you do what you need to do, and if it means occasionally using a shake or bar to make your goal then do so.

It just amazes me how different each dr's "rules" are... My surgeon tells us that we will be drinking protein shakes for the rest of our lives. He says that after surgery our bodies don't absorb much in the way of nutrients from our food and we need to get them from other sources. My dr's protocol is that I take probably 18-20 different pills (everything from Vitamin A to Zinc!) a day as well as getting 90 grams of protein through the shakes. Whatever food I take in after that is more or less just for my own gratification... I know we should follow our own dr's rules, but I personally don't think it would hurt you to have a shake every day to help get the protein grams in. But then I'm no doctor!!

I am amazed-my dr only says up to 50grams of protien a day plus al the vits. The dietian and Dr says by now we should be able to get our protien in by the food we eat. I agree every dr. is different but I didn't realize that they are SO different.

That's one thing I've found reading the message boards on this site - the dr's are very different. After my surgery I had to be on clear liquids for 4 weeks and I've seen others who are eating soft foods just days after surgery. I find it very weird that there is such a huge difference in the "rules"!! I guess that keeps things interesting!!

My dr. is the same way. He wants us to have 50 gms, but refuses to consider shakes and bars good sources. What I think is funny though, they only want you to eat 1/4 cup at each meal, and that little amount its almost impossible to get the amount needed per day. I supplement ocassionally, and try to find high protein choices. Luckily I can tolerate milk, which helps.

Hello, As you know I've had surgery and it's been a year. You sound so confused, don't be. I think your Dr was not very clear. I think he probably does'nt think to much of Protien Drinks. Oh well. I think you can either drink them or not it's just a preferance. I drink GNC choc. Protien drinks for breakfast usually. Then eat protient in normal quanities for the two remaining meals. Don't hung up on 60 grams per day. Just as long as you get it regularly and balanced. If you have to see another Dr. Hope I've helped God Bless Karen
