Having Difficulty with Foods/Liquids
I had GBS on 12/18 and I am having a VERY hard time with my food and liquid intake. I am on Soft/Pureed phase and am only getting about 12-16oz in and very little protein because I can keep nothing down. I have tried all types of liquids, even water makes me vomit. When I am eating I feel like food is getting 'stuck' which is painful, even when its liquid and then I get naseaus (sp?) and vomit, then feel fine. I chew the heck out of food, but it doesnt seem to matter.
I would love to chat with someone about my issues and receive ANY advice on how you all are adjusting. I am know I am halting weightloss by not getting liquids and proteins in. Anyone else go through this?? Please help....I am desperate!!
I also had surgery on 12/18...I can relate with you on not getting in my proper amounts of protein and fluids. However, i think my problems are more mental that physical like yours. I have only "thrown up" once and that's b/c I ate took much and too fast. Now back to you, if you can't keep anything down including liquids, you may need to make a call to your doctor. But first, are you sipping slowly? Also, are you foods pureed to the consistency of apple sauce or similiar? If not, they need to be. What kinds of stuff are you eating? Try things like mash potatoes, apple sauce, scrambled egg, ect....Tonight for the first time, I pureed 1/2 of a small container of chili from Wendys. Remarkably I had no problems, other than I can eat again 2 hours later.
I am having lots of difficulty with eating even pureed foods. I get that stuck feeling and next thing I know I am throwing up. I would say I have a success rate of about 10% keeping down anything that isn't liquid.
I am keeping down clear liquids and if I drink protein drinks slow I do ok.
I think you should be seeing your doctor if you can't keep down water - that sounds dangerous to me.
Please let us know how you make out - I'd like to know that you are getting some liquids at least.
Warmest regards,
Jenni
Kelly,
If you are not able to keep liquids down (especially water), you need to CALL YOUR SURGEON IMMEDIATELY!!! That is a sign of major complications. Since you are having this much trouble with the liquids, forget about the food for a while. The most important thing is that you stay hydrated. After you build up to at least 48 ounces of fluid a day, then you can start trying food again SLOWLY.
Please call your doctor, the situation you described is not a good one.
Let us know what he/she says!
Best of Luck
I had my surgery 12/28. I was having the same problems. Needless to say I just got out of the hospital after a 3 day stay. My esophagas was obstructed and the food or liquids could not get down. Also it was affecting my oxygen levels. I was extremely sick and waited way too long to go to the hospital. Dont take a chance go to the emergency room if you have to.
Hi Kelly,
Oh Yes... We unfortunately have things in common.
I had surgery on 12/19. Water, can't handle anymore. I can eat sugarfree popsicles, cream soup, Dannon Smoothie Yogurts and do ok with my shakes (Isopure)
I'm in the soft stage and wthin about 3 wks or so...... I'll be where I can add in regular foods.... I dont see this happening. I'm the same way, everything gets stuck. Funny thing is, they sell this toast near the melba toast, that.... I can eat.
I can also eat Gerber Graduate Cookies
Try mashed potatoes--you can even use Parkay Spray Butter or Gravy (just ck the ingredients)
Hang in there....... we can't be the only ones!
