Protein question
Ok so today is the first day on full liquids which means my first day post surgery that I am using the Protein powder. I was wanting something warm this afternoon and went through my Barix recipes and settled on Hot Chocolate. My stomach has been feeling a little funny since I drank it What gives? Was it the hot chocolate (1% milk) or the protein. I layed down with a heating pad on my belly for a bit and it helped ... but would love to avoid it again if I can LOL
Thoughts? Suggestions?
All comments would be welcome!
It could have happend for several different reasons. Here are a few possibilities i can think of:
1. It might have been the milk. I know that after WLS many people begin to have trouble tolerating dairy products. Suggestion: Try a lactose free product like Reduced Fat Lactaid Milk instead of regular milk. (That solved my problem )
2. It might have been the protein. The first week on protein powder you may need to dilute it a little more until you build up a tolerance for it. Suggestions: Dilute it to 50/50 or 50/25/25 or try something lighter like Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast and work your way up to other forms of protein. For Hot Chocolate, make the Dark Chocolate Flavor and then heat it in the microwave.
3. It may have been too hot. For some people, if the temperatures of food or drinks are too hot or too cold, it can aggrevate the pouch. Suggestion: Let it cool down a little more before drinking
4. You may have drank it too fast. My doc told me that it should take me 30 minutes to drink 8 ounces of protein. Suggestion: If you drank it fast, slow down
Hope this helps!
I am just 3 weeks post op but I still have some problems with protein shakes. I find that Carnation Instant Breakfast is good in the AM. My Dr. had me using skim milk, drinking very slowly and taking a good 30 minutes for both eating and drinking. It did help the queasy feeling and now in my 3rd week, I get to eat some protein too, berry smoothies made with vanilla flavored protein mix are really good. Keep experimenting and good luck!
