My surgery is scheduled for next wednesday, and to be honest, I haven't satarted my pre-op diet yet. I know I am starting out wrong already, but if I was able to diet on my own, I wouldn't even need the band. How important is the diet?

I so totally agree with you. if i could diet on my own I would not want to get the lap band. I am on a diet before I am even approved, how stupid is that. if i could lose weight on my own way would I need to lose weight. But, I think that it is neccessary to be on a liquid diet so that your gallbladder coul get smaller so the surgeon could perform easier.

Pre-diet is VERY important. It helps to shrink the liver so the Doctor can lift the liver out of the way to get to the stomach easier.

It is absolutely important! My doctor flat said if he gets inside and can see we haven't done the preop, he will back out and reschedule for when we had. You have to get yourself on liquids now! It's best for YOU! Chris

Isn't the pre-op diet also important in regards to post op recovery for the stomach and intestines?

Hi Christine: My name is Patricia Patton (pdplpn) and lst I am a gastric bypass pt 7 1/2 mos out since my surgery and have lost a total of 135 lbs. The lst 45 lbs came off prior to my surgery during the 6 mos waiting period. I followed the surgeron's recommended 1200-1500 cal diet and I worked out at Curves at least 3-5x weekly I also took all the recommended vitamins I was to start after surgery before, so I could get use to the tatstes and in a good habit of taking them. Now, as an RN I can tell you this was vital to me. I was a less surgical risk and the doc had an easier time in surgery. he also told me because of the massive adhesions I had from 3 c-sections and a hysterectomy yrs ago spared me an open proceedure. I was healthy and in good shape. I have an unsual condition with healing which caused months of complications and hospitalizations. It was not something usual but, none the less I had 4 surgeries and 4 endoscopies since the gastric by pass and he told me I hung in there literally because I was in good shape before the surgery. You know any surgery has a risk of complications and this surgery is nothing to sneeze at or routine. You will get a jumps start on the weight loss, it will help you get use to new eating habits and make recovery better for you. Write me sometime to keep me updated. Insurance wants to see if you are commited to weight loss and helps for the approval. You want the best outcome. Say goodbye to old eating habits now, so you can concentrate on recovery and picking up in a smaller capacity in eating.... Patricia

I was never asked to go on a liquid diet before the surgery, and I did ask. He said since I had lost already it wasn't important, but you must lose 15lbs(depening on your weight now) or your liver will be so large with fatty tissue that he will have to open you up rather then laproscopic or not do the surgery at all. I did it eating only soft meat like chicken breast or fish(not fried, but roasted or baked;and not soaking in the fat) and only salads/vegitables and MAYBE a tablespoon a day of carbs to get my energy for my exercises. Once I was in the operating room the doc said my tissue was not tough, it was very tender and easy to ply and move around. He said he hasn't seen that good of tissue in a very long time. So it is not in the LIQUID, but in the high protien side of the diet and watch your fat, salt, and carbs VERY closely. Good luck! Jeannie

Now I'm not a doctor or an RN or anything but I do know it totally dpends on the doctor for the liquid diet before hand! My doctor is not having me do this liquid diet before hand and my surgery is next week monday (12-17-07) I'm excited and everything! The only thing I have to do pre-op is stop eating after 5p on sunday and no fluids after midnight. So in my opion you should call your doctor (or his head nurse) and tlak to them about it to see what is to be best for you and to see if starting your liquid diet now would help! Don't cut yourself short and don't make it to where the surgery is harder for and for the surgoen! Either way Good luck with your dision and your surgery!!
