Well I'm wondering what everyone is meaning by the liquid diet....the reason is is because my surgeon is not having me do a liquid diet, he is just haveing me not eat after 5pm the night before surgery according to her head nurse it's the same effect. so when you guys say liquid diet what exactly are you talking about?

Liquid Diet means you are only consuming liquids. You are limited to liquids food per your doctor. For example: Broth Sugar Free Pudding Sugar Free Jello Protein Shakes Cream of Wheat Sugar Free Yogurt Sugar Free Popsicles

Some surgeons require you to go on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to your surgery date. Some do not. Who knows why??

Hi, Angela - I think all these posts have answered your question, but I just had to chime in, too. I find it very interesting that different surgeons require different things. Mine does require a 2 week clear liquid die****er, Crystal Light (or similar), broth, SF jello, SF popsicles and protein shakes. I think we can have clamato juice or something, too, but I don't like that stuff. I was told that the purpose of the clear liquid diet is to shrink the liver so the surgery is easier for the surgeon to perform laporasopically. But I've heard of other surgeons like yours who don't require it. I guess it must be personal preference for the surgeon. Anyway, best of luck to you when you have your surgery! Mine is Dec. 6 and I am getting very anxious! ~Nancy~

I started my liquid diet on Monday, sinceI have to do this for 2 weeks. I have a few options of what I can do but the first one is to have a total of 5 Slim Fast Optimas or High Protein Shakes a day, giving about 50 grams of Protein and lower carbohydrates. The other is 6 of the Carnation Instant Breakfast No Sugar Added mixed with skim or 1% milk. It really hasn't been as hard as I thought, of course the face that I'm traveling for work and am not at home may be helpful. I've had a hard time drinking all 5 of te slim fast a day, 4 of them keep me pretty satisfied in addition to drinking water. They say it's to help shrink the liver and to get you accustomed to what your diet will be like for after the surgery. I'm jus thoping I can keep it up until surgery, once I get home it will be harder i know!! Best wishes to you and LUCKY YOU for not having to do the whole bowel prep and liquid diet.

Hi, I am still waiting for my surgery date, but mine said "no special diet" either. My main fear is the pain after surgery, I am so freaked out by that for some reason. I have seen peoples uTube videos and they look and sound just horrible. I hope they give me good pain meds, Im such a big baby! I also worry about how long it takes to be back up and back to work. I know everyone is different, but I wish I had someone to talk to about this stuff. Please let me know if anyone out there wants to keep in touch with me and we can compare our experiences with each other. I think that would be so nice.
