WHAT DOES FULL FEEL LIKE???

I SWEAR I DON'T THINK I HAVE LEARNED A COTTON PICKING THING DURING THIS WHOLE PROCESS.

I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT FULL IS SUPPOSE TO FEEL LIKE,( I JUST SIP WHEN I EAT). WHEN I MEASURE OUT MY FOOD I EAT THAT THEN STOP BUT THEN ABOUT AN HOUR OR SO LATER I'M HUNGRY AGAIN.  BUT IF I'M NOT MEASURING I EAT UNTIL MY STOMACH HURTS AND I KNOW THAT ISN'T RIGHT.  FOR EXAMPLE YESTERDAY FOR LUNCH WE WENT TO TEXAS ROADHOUSE I ORDERED GRILLED CHICKEN, CAESAR SALAD, AND GREEN BEANS.  I ATE 1/2 OF THE CHICKEN, 1/2 OF THE SALAD, A FEW GREEN BEANS, AND A ROLL.  TOOK THE REST HOME IN A GO BOX.  I FELT FULL BUT NOT OVERSTUFFED.

NOW.....  LAST NIGHT AT SUPPER I ATE THE REST OF THE CHICKEN, GREEN BEANS, AND ANOTHER ROLL  THEN WANTED SOMETHING SWEET TO EAT SO GOT A BANANA AND SOME PEANUT BUTTER.  WELL WHEN I GOT DONE I WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO SICK!!!! I HAD TO GO TO BED.  I KNOW BETTER THAN TO DO THIS STUPID STUFF BUT FOR SOME REASON I KEEP DOING IT.

PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THIS?

Honestly Melissa, I am the worst person to answer this b/c I don't get an overfull feeling and have never vomited.  I think my food jsut gets pushed through the stoma without me realizing it, especially if its not dense protein.  I do feel full if i eat dense meat after about 6-8 oz but it does take that much for me.  Best to keep measuring and stop when u have had enough.
Hugs, Melissa

I learned a long time ago (from my first surgical pouch in '99) that there just isn't the same old full feeling and  never will be again.  You have to, have to, have to let go of that.  Mourn it, feel sad about it and then get on with living without it.  You just have to Melissa.  You gotta stop making yourself feel guilty that you are overeating.  There is only one way to not overeat...find a way to measure your food.  Whether it is with actual devices or little games like protein the size of a golf ball, tennis ball, deck of cards...whatever.  Set a system up for yourself and start getting used to it.   And you already know you gotta get rid of that sipping with your meal.  I have coffee with my breakfast every day now and I know it is wrong but it is just something I don't give up.  The rest of my meals tho, no sipping!  If you are sipping, no amount of measuring is going to help because you are just washing that food out of your pouch and you can be the energizer bunny of eating.

What size plates are you eating from?  If you are using regular dinner plates, stop.  Go back to your little dishes...I'll bet you used them right after surgery.

Your restuarant meal sounds like great choices and a decent amount for a postop as far out as us.  I'll bet the salad and the green beans made that chicken slide down and you didn't blow up your pouch to the point where you got that signal from your body that it was time to stop.  Not a full signal, mind you, but that pouch still stretches and sends that message to the brain that it has gotten food in it.  Remember, that takes 20 minutes.  So slow down while you are enjoying that food and maybe you won't get to the point where you are overstuffed.  (from your leftovers, I mean)

I'm so sad that you don't have a live support group to attend.  I get to go twice a month now...what a luxury that is!!!  Thank goodness you are still hanging out here with us because we are all fighting these same things and we have to be able to get suggestions and help from others.

Big hugs for you!!!

Hope you aren't mad, I don't want to be preachy cause heaven knows I'm no perfect eater.  Did you happen to catch the Oprah episode this week with those blue highlighted places in the world where people live a long time and are healthier?  I only saw part of it but loved a quote about the Japanese....there is a certain saying they recite before eating that translates to something like 'remember to only eat 80%'.  I'm sure it would be easy to find on her website.  Oprah seemed very impressed with that.

It is a good theory too, to be mindful to only eat a portion of what we want to eat and learn to just eat enough and not too much.  Doubt any of us here in America-the-Land-of-Plenty can do that full time but if we at least try it can't hurt, huh?

You have a good week too!

hugs,
Molly
