Give Me 5 Good Snack Ideas, Guys!!!

I've decided to go back to eating plainer foods, as in the earlier post-op days... before the cravings struck again.  I need variety to keep my EATS healthy, but I also like to eat small quantities of different snacks / foods to round out my day.  If you can help by listing at least some of your favorite legal (less guilt producing) foods, I'd really appreciate knowing about them.  If you are out of the Eastern area, where do you purchase the foods?

Some foods may be debatable, but discussion is a good thing!  This far out, I'm sure that some of you have found "go to foods" that quench the binge mode.  I like savory foods most of the time, but I've found that my cravings started after adding Sweeteners... and then progressed to the real deal... surgery snacks, including Cinnamon Life Cereal... very addicting!

DUH....   surgery snacks????    I meant....    sugary snacks!

Lately Cheetos have been calling my name, but I've been able to walk away.  How bad are Cheetos????   Somewhat?  Very?

  Cheetos =  BAD !!!!

My husband is a smoker but he smokes outside because it gives me migraines.   If your guys have to have Cheetos just remind them that those give you fat, high blood pressure (sodium), cravings....crankiness!  And make them eat them outside the home.

And don't even go near 'organic' Cheetos.  Been there, done that, never again.  'Nuff said.

To me a 'snack' is a food that I hadn't planned on adding to my food budget for the day but will eat anyway so it usually isn't geared towards being sometehing to quench the binge mode but rather to fuel it.  Not good for me so I try not to view it as a snack but rather as another small meal addition.  Just a little rearrangment of old thinking.

Some favorites that will hold me for a long time....cheese sticks, Oberto Turkey Jerky (at Costco), a homemade muffin from my freezer stash, a hot cup of tea or coffee, a package of Tofu Shirataki noodles sautee'd with some wasabi teriyaki sauce.  In the summertime when the fruit is good I usually also eat a big dish of either strawberries, watermelon, canteloupe or a big huge peach.

What was I thinking????   BAD, very Bad!!!

Picked up standard 2% cheese supply, new to me... Kashi bars, new to me... Post Great Grains cereal for my yogurt, more mini popcorn, Smartfood White Cheddar Popcorn (bad???) at BJ's.

Bought Fiber One's Cinnamon Apple Muffin mix there too... might have to freeze these... Huh?

The Oberto Beef Jerky did not do "it" for me... I'll check-out a small bag of the turkey!  Still looking for the Tofu Shirataki around here!

Going to local market for fruits next week...
Thanks, Molly

My snack of choice this week has been APPLES. I bought a HUGE basket of Honey Crisp apples this week and OMG they are wonderful. I need to stay away from crunchy salty as I sooo CRAVE them.

Pssst.....how much are apples there?  Here I live in Apple Country and the best I've been able to do lately was 98 cents a pound which only lasted one week.  Most apples are around $1.99 #.

Sheesh, prices!

Molly

ps...LOVE the new avvie!

Just remembered... I did pick up some "different" foods at BJ's to change around my meals, which have gotten pretty boring.  Smaller items that I can add to a salad were shrimp, crab cakes, and Barber's reduced fat Marco Polo chicken.  Also bought stuffed clams... mostly breading, but as a part of a meal... hopefully not so bad.  I can bake a small quantity and keep the rest frozen.  I picked a "complete" corn muffin mix (just add water) so that I can make a batch of mini muffin; instead of buying a larger quantity... and eating or freezing them.

Took out my Dutch Oven and made a few savory meals recently.  I usually start with partially prepared food (Lazy) and then add veggies and seasoning.  I used to love to cook and have had to modify most meals.  A long time ago, there was a discussion about logging-in larger / higher number of calories than we thought that we might have eaten to "cover" the difference and give our best guess.  I find that I do this whenever I eat at a restaurant, assuming that they are adding butter, etc.  So home cooking is a much better plan for me.

beef stew (started with 2 packs of Hormel Beef au jus)
"jambalaya" (started with Zatarain's and added Gaspar Chorizo) ... DH enjoyed; too spicy for me!
beef shanks (add 2 mini bottles of Vendange Cabernet Sauvignon and beef stock with base veggies...removed meat...  pulsed base into sauce once slightly reduced... added ****ake mushrooms w/ rosemary & garlic oil packet)
pea soup (started with dry split peas... added smoked ham... stock-like gelatin from 4 BJ's rotisserie chickens (frozen stuff on hand) and 2 boxes of Tabatchnick's Low Sodium pea soup)

Everything above got a good dose of different veggies!  Yum... and I have different "Go Tos".

I usually stay away from red meat... Next week I have smoked turkey legs and ground turkey... and the "seafood" listed above.  I love my big red pot!  Not Le Creuset... but from Le Target Store!

That's funny about your big pot!  There was just an article in our food edition of the paper last week where they talked about the revival in the use of Dutch Ovens.  My mom used to always use an oval Le Creuset until it literally wore out and then she got a new one when they were visiting us in Germany.  With us living on an airman's salary then I couldn't afford one but did get one when we moved back to the states and like you, it is one of my fav. pots.  It is THEEE pot I always use for nice roasts and always for my strawberry-rhubarb jam batches.

Had a brain-dead moment yesterday....I got a new crock pot and made beef stew for the guys and ended up grabbing a bowl for myself.  Hello, Molly!?  You haven't been able to eat beef since you got a surgical pouch in '99!   Remember???  Oooh, that's right!

Hours of pain from stuck beef later--  life got back to normal. hahaha

Sorry, I can't get excited about your stuffed clams.    About the only shellfish I used to actually enjoy eating is deep fried prawns at a Chinese restaurant.   All the rest of them are either too slimy or rubbery for my taste.   I'm boring, I know.

Wish you could see the birds in my backyard today...it looks like a nature preserve out there.  Must be a stopping point for them as they are heading down to visit Bea.  The Starlings are absolute clowns...two or three of them crowd into the birdbaths together and then they sort of motor-boat their wings for a bath and spray water everwhere.  Then when the birdbath is empty they move to another one.

I'd better quit having fun and get to work, the weekend ends too fast!
