Scary 'News' at Supp. Grp

BTW....don't you love the update to our forum?!  Thank you OH!!!!

Ok...Thursday night was monthly support group meeting and despite the gain this week I was there.  It is a goal to have perfect attendance and I believe it is a critical part of my lifelong recovery efforts over obesity.

The group leader who is my surgeon's bariatric coordinator (RN and 6 years post-op herself) mentioned that in their practice they have noticed over the years that it is VERY common for postops to go through a depression stage at the 2 yr. mark.

WHAT??!!??

I have never heard of this before...have I just not been paying attention?  Have any of you heard of this from your surgeons or observed it here on OH?  This summer I can tell I am dealing with increased depression but chalked it up to sleep deprivation, exhaustion and this blasted regain.  Don't tell me it is just part of the post op process!!!!

So maybe the next step is to get my Prozac prescription re-evaluated and kick it up a notch.  Since I can't afford counselling right now that is about the best I can do.  Going to look for a book a dear at supp. group recommended called 'Love Hunger'.  (Relying on my faulty memory here, I think that is what it was and bet that it is the same book I am thinking of that Oprah touted a few years ago.)  Supposed to help with emotional hunger and depression that translates into self medication with food.  Sounds like something good to read!

Anyhow, having a busy weekend and am sooo tired.  I'm sorry to be whining about that all the time but it just surprises me after having been so full of excess energy the first year post-op.  It feels a bit unfair to be so tired considering I am not dragging around all that excess weight I had before.

Hi Molly... Hope that your energy returns soon... Are you taking sub-lingual B-12 or injections??  Are you feeling tired or depressed?  Sounds like a bit of both...  feel better!!!

Earlier this month, our support group changed leaders and the department head held a combined meeting of Pre-ops, Lap Band, Under 1 year RnY, Over 1 year Rny patients.  She suggested that a psychological component be added to the format, but did not mention that depression was a problem at 2 years out.  It will be interesting to find-out what the new leaders have to say about it next month.  Bummer... if depression is a "given" for us!!!

OH format should make it easier to follow updates ONCE the Dec. MB revs-up again!
Where have all of the Dec members gone???
I'd love for them to become ACTIVE here because it could be FUN!!!
Remember FUN....

Hi Ro,
Sub-lingual b-12.  Plus a b comlex too and a boatload of caffiene.

My surgeon's bariatric practice is about to expand to include lap bands and they are going to have to switch to two groups a month but we'd (the patients) always hoped they'd switch to two meetings a month to have one just for post ops.  I love being around the pre-ops and newbies, don't get me wrong, but it would also be soooo helpful to be in a group without them.

Whooo...I got a sunburn yesterday when I was at my rose society function.  Brought my own lactaid latte and was a bit embarrassed to see that they were selling homemade lattes there to raise money.  Oops!   But they didn't have any sugar free selections anyway.  I made a lemon cake to take and also a batch of my auntie's banana bread to take.  Sorry to say that I ate half a piece of the banana bread at home and it was fabulous!  I did budget it into my sparkpeople though so it wasn't a 'cheat'.

Crossing fingers we get the mb more active as time goes.  We may never have the same amount of traffic as before but we can still have fun!

Hey, Molly... I don't know what else it could be... unless you need to darken your bedroom; even the LED lights to prevent your body from shutting-down its melatonin production... less sleep!  The shut-down can happen when you use that bathroom light, during mid-night pit-stops.

The group leader were asked to keep the groups separate by the members.  They also asked that a room be left "unlocked" in the building for a casual, informal meeting place the week following our meeting.  Then they added... but we might need a monitor there so that there is positive focus at the chat.  If it is a get-together time, why have a monitor... so that some of the members don't become "overbearing" and controlling the time???  It's too far for me to travel for a casual talk so I am less concerned about the 2nd casual meeting.

I like you determination... keeping the FUN is a Good Thing!

depression and being over weight? hummmm, never thought that could be possible------

I have suffered and still suffer from depression eventhough loosing 145lbs have helped but it's not the cure. I am working very hard on my own to get out of it and it has worked for me(most of the time) I believe that having a positive attitud in life helps cure depression.

Any idea why you are feeling so tired? I have beeing feeling like that too lately and I do not like it. I am thinking that maybe I should start exercising again to gain more stamina and feel less tired...wanna give it a try?

Just proves that they may have fixed our stomachs and helped us lose weight but it sure doesn't cure our heads.  You are right about having a positive attitude too.  i know when I let my attitude slip then my depression gets worse.

Am definitely more tired because of the season...I just can't get enough sleep this time of year but it seems worse this summer.  Couldn't be I'm another year older this summer?  (horrors!)

I'm with you on the exercising more...it is really worth a try.  My goal is to get on my treadmill on all my 4-hr. shift days.  In the past I'd been really good about that and then gave it up.

Let's try!

Molly
