Low blood sugars !!!!
Has anyone experienced low blood sugars??? I am 14 months out and down 117 lbs,way under goal and the dr told me to gain some weight. Lord knows I have never in my life been told that before... My blood sugars are running really low, woke me up in the middle of the night, checked my sugar because i was not al together and it was 38, now tonight I set here feeling funny , light headed, blurred vision, and It is 50. I don't eat anythin with sugar and now fruit juices or fruit. i am lost and confused on what to eat anmore. Has anyone experienced this before? My dr says eat protein to keep he sugar levels up....I am trying... It is scarey when it drops like that, sweating , dazed and confused..... any suggestions??
Donna, I'm so sorry you aren't feeling well. I hope that Melissa will see this and reply, she has been struggling with this too. Since I never got to actual diabetes before surgery I don't test my blood sugars but there have been times when I've felt like they are probably low and I always just drank some juice or had some fruit to bring them up but you really should keep working with your doctor. Just how much did he want you to regain? That is a scary prospect, I'm sure, but you must take care of your health. Hope you will be able to get it under control soon.

Hi Donna! Bless your heart, You are strumming the tune to of my own song I think!!!
This is what I can tell you.. carbs, especially white carbs will plummet my sugar in the bottoms every single time. So stay away from white flours, sugars, pasta, rice, bread, tortillas.. look for whole grains.. make sure it doesn't say "enriched whole wheat flour" on the label.. "enriched" means its not really that good of a choice and not a true "whole grain". You want foods that are lowest on the glycemic index... look for items containing at least 4 grams of soluable fiber.. here are some suggestions for you..
Beans -- any kind, kidney, black, garbanzo, canelli, northern.. etc.. great sources of good complex carbs and high in fiber.
Rice - whole grain rice only, brown rice
Pasta - whole grain pastas and they even have whole grain pastas with protein added in..
Bread - Weigh****chers has a great bread source on the market.. just their plain WW bread. I break them up into 2 slices and put them in baggies and freeze them, pull them out when I need them (isn't often.. not much for bread really).
Waffles - Kashi makes an excellent regular and blueberry variety of these.
Pizza - Kashi again.. in the frozen section, individual ones or big ones frozen.. follow the appropriate portion sizes.
Tortillas - LaTortilla makes a 50 calorie tortilla that is high in fiber and protein. Also Joeseph's is great for pitas and tortillas and Flat Out makes an awesome flat out bread that you can use one for two servings.. they are big!
Hot Cereal - Quaker Weight Smart any flavor or Kashi Varieties. (these still make my blood sugar drop though.. too many good carbs per serving so be cautiaus!)
Cold Cereal - I have tried several and I always revert back to Kashi Go Lean.. I use light vanilla soy milk and blueberries with it. It is the only one that doesn't have my blood sugar dropping later.
Fruit - Eat berries mainly.. they are high in fiber and low in sugar. Apples are higher and I have to only eat half with peanut butter or cheese to keep my sugars in check.
No, I am no longer diabetic, I was preop but that is in remission now but every since I hit one year out I have struggled with "reactive hypoglycemia". I have gotten to where I just know its low.. and eat something when it happens. I always keep a bar with me (protein bar like Atkins PB granola) so I am getting a good source of carbs to bring my sugar up but also protein to sustain me and not make me drop again. Sometimes it still will though.
I find that when I am eating bad.. my body lets me know it. Dumping if I eat sugar and low blood sugars if I am eating way too many carbs, even good carb sources.
It's a balancing act and there are times I get very frustrated with it, you can ask anyone on the board. It makes me figuring out maintenance hard b/c I will have eaten my 1200-1500 cals for the day then have this start up and I go way over my allowances.. I truly hate it. Sometimes (not often tho) if I eat totally balanced I still have it happening tome and that is when I want to pull my hair out.
I really suggest you log what you are eating and make sure you are getting in enough protein and only good carbs and not "too many" of those.. google search "glycemic index" of foods and look at the numbers, research low glycemic sources. Make the necessary changes in your diet and you will feel a lot better. If you do not, be sure and see you primary doctor and or an endocrinologist who can better assist you with this matter. There are a few on OH that have gotten really bad even with following strict diets and have had seizures or partial pancreatectomies.. lets not even think that will be us. I refuse to think that. Try adjusting your diet and go from there. Also, if you are working out be sure to eat a good carb/protein source beforehand and then after follow it with more protein for best benefits.... I usually have a small protein bar before and then drink a SF latte or small protein shake after.. hope this helps!
Good luck! Please come back to this board whenever you need support, that is what we are all here for! *hugs*
Thank you Thank you Thank you for this post!!! I have the same problem. I've been given a monitor and I absolutely hate this blood sugar problem. I have never had this problem before. Megan has some GREAT pointers! I'm going to print them out and keep them on hand for when I do have low sugars. I go back to my Dr on the 5th to see what she recommends.
