has anyone had high on here liver tests? My 1 yr check up and all blood work was in normal range except the SGT and SGOT. (Liver) My family Dr said i need to see a specialist. Has anyone had high counts? I am down 114 lbs . I am way under my goal and was told to gain weight. lord knows no one ever told me that before... Just wondering if anyone else had this happen before. A bit worried. Thanks Merry Christmas to all...

Hi Donna.. I have heard of this over the years on OH.. that liver enzymes go up after surgery. Did you have them redrawn to be sure they weren't an inaccurate result? if not, I would suggest this first before going to a specialist.. just to be on the safe side and know FOR SURE they are elevated. (I have seen some whacky lab results as a nurse and then they are normal after the redraw on patients). Sometimes the blood hemolyzes (thickens up in the tube) and can alter values. I would also suggest posting this question on the main board and maybe even the graduate board, you will get a lot more feedback there. Also, what did your surgeon say about it? Keep us posted. I will be back in a few days (heading out of town) please keep me posted! Hugs, Melissa

Hi, Donna... Hope that you are getting "some sleep" after getting not so great news... I don't know what the results mean, but send you my best wishes that everything will be OK. Melissa has a good point about the retest of labs. I had a (non-liver related) set taken a few years ago and was told by the lab that there didn't seem to be a problem; my PCP corrected what I was told by adding that the sample was insufficiently mixed. The meds that I was taking cleared up the problem and I felt fine again. In your situation, I'd have a retest... just to be on the safe side. Sometimes I feel (more than) a bit overwhelmed by my lack of knowledge of the what the body needs to function properly after WLS. I really hope that all is OK and wish that you did not have to go through this problem at all... ((((Hugs)))) Ro Donna... I posted this info the other day ...Perhaps you could ask your Drs / Nut if they feel that the OH article is on-target... This sounds a little too simple, but if it's right then maybe you can get some relief and peace. Partial Repost: Did the Nut mention protein intake? Mine still likes the 50-70g range; more just taxes the liver. Nov/Dec OH Magazine info about "Too Much of a Good Thing" from page 54 reads: "Protein is essential, but it is possible to get too much protein in your diet! Your portein needs may be calculated by your dietitian, and they are typically -- in the range of 60-80 grams per day after WLS. Exceeding this amount on a daily basis can put a strain on your liver and kidneys. Eating too many animanl products may also increase the fat and cholesterol in your diet. Balance is key when focusing on protein needs after WLS. It is important to get your goal needs, but there is no benefit in being a protein overachiever!"
