Good Morning Natalie! I have been putting off doing this test for some time now.. for a couple reasons. First, I am afraid to know. Second, after reading about "slider" foods on Kay Bailey's 5 day pouch site it makes me think that the cottage cheese would start emptying from our pouch almost immediately no matter what size stoma you have.. so how accurate is it really? I donno.. We are supposed to be able to hold 1 to 1 1/2 cups of chewed food by 1 year out I keep reading... remember chewed food. I know I am still within this guideline but there are only a couple people I know of who can eat the amount I can and that bothers me.. I keep saying to myself "melissa just because you can, doesn't mean you should" So I measure out the amount I wanna eat and wait 20 mins (whether or not I am full at the time) and then i STOP.. i get the signal to my brain and I am ok. I do find during PMS week though for some reason I crave wanting to feel "full" and I strive for it.. crazy b/c that is why my cals keep getting really high. I have decided that if I want to get vegtables from now on with my meat they are gonna have to be raw to slightly steamed no mushier.. they will also fill you up and smaller calories.. can u handle raw veggies? I can handle it all so anything works for me.. another thing that sorta bothers me.. why can I handle all foods and no one else seems to be able to (for instance.. I puke chicken up every time I try or I can't eat pork.. or I can't eat tortillas or etc.. im like WHAT? i can eat it ALL) I have never related to anyone like that every since postop.. so werid. Ok I am on a tangent. I think you 10 oz is fine natalie.. did it start creeping up your throat? I tried it when I was 4 months out and that is how I knew i was full. I never feel a stuffed pouch very often.. I get the creeping up the throat business or the hiccup.. maybe a watery nose from time to time but rarely. I need to learn the signs better on fullness.. that is for sure. You are doing just fine.. I really believe that. Look how far you have come? We didn't get this far with broken pouches, remember that! *hugs*

Melissa, That's amazing and a huge relief that I found another person just like me in that respect. Not only can I handle raw veggies, chicken, steak, pasta, bread and absolutely everything else in pretty large quantities, i can also do alcohol with no weird effects most people have post-op (obviously, i don't take it as a license to drink excessively or frequently). the only thing that makes me feel icky is too much sugar (but again, it has to be a huge quantity like 3 scoops of regula ice cream with hot fudge or something). even with that, i just feel nauseated for about 20-30 minutes but don't fully dump (never had diahrea or anything). I don't get full easily either so I do the same thing you do (most of the time or unless i'm PMSing, which is wait for 20 minutes to see if i'm still starving. with the cottage cheese, i had to stop after 2 minutes cause i knew i was going to finish the whole 12 oz container otherwise. about a minute later, i felt a slightly uncomfortable sensation in my pouch, which went away in a couple of minutes (like the food was pressing again the walls or something). the cottage cheese did not back up nor was it creeping back up my throat (i know the feeling i get it sometimes when i don't chew veggieburgers or other very dense protein well). anyway, i guess i just have to accept that i have a larger and less sensitive pouch than 99% of people out there and watch my calorie intake and exercise religiously for the rest of my life. (that really doesn't sounf so bad when i think about it) i do feel slightly better, though, because i'm pretty sure that since i started exercising a couple of months ago, my metabolism sped up and it is probably is pretty similar to that of a normal person so i hope i do burn at least 2000cals a day (do you know if there's some medical test i can do to actually measure it)? remember, you have done absolutely great, you are below goal and a sucess story 10 times over. the average WLS patient loses 66-75% of their excess weight--you lost OVER 100% in less than a year!!!! you will continue to do just fine and i'm here for you. (if nothing else, we'll get each other though our almost daily freak-outs about food, calories, etc. and we'll both hopefully learn to chill out about it in another year or so, after we learn how to maintain long term) love ya, girl

There is a medical test you can do to see what your basal metabolic rate is. Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR is the calories you burn just existing (sleeping, sitting, breathing, heart beating etc with NO activity on your behalf). You can usually eat 20-30% above that to maintain your weight depending on how active your lifestyle is. I believe if you go to newleaffitness.com. It has a site locator of where you can get tested. You blow into a machine for about 10 minutes and it spits out your BMR and I believe the cals u can consume to maintain and its very accurate. Then I am also having a physical assessment done where I walk on a treadmill slowly till I am jogging and at max heart rate and it will tell me what my max heart rate is and target heart rate so that I can exercise in the right zone for either fat burning or cardiac health. The whole test runs about 1.5 hours long and is 70 bucks for me. I am doing it on Dec 12 and then I have my 1 year follow up with my doc and will show the results to them and see what they say, they are pretty set on saying 1200 calories for LIFE.. so we will see. Hope this helps, I think all WLS patients should invest in this test so u have a better understanding of how our metabolisms really are and we should probably be tested yearly as things do change. *hugs*

Rember that sometimes our "head" pouch is bigger that our real pouch, the key here is to eat the right amounts and forget about the size of the pouch. If you get hungry in between meals, drink lost of water and focus on something else because it could also be "head hunger". For me, its mostly head hunger b/c so far I have not had any real hunger pains. Bea
