Question about carbs

I recently started journaling my food intake with Fitday.com and soon realized that carbs are not only in the form of bread, pasta and so forth. There is carbs in everything we eat, especially in dairies which are a good source of protein. So, my question is how to handle this situation? Right now, I have about 113 grams of carbs and 75 of protein. I always thought that by staying away from breads and so forth I will be getting no carbs at all. How have you handle this?

Beatriz, I haven't had a consult with my nut. since I was 3 months post-op but at that appointment she told me she wanted me to start cutting down on my dairy intake. At that point I'd been eating a lot of ff mozzarella sticks, ff ricotta, ff cottage cheese...etc. She wanted me to branch out more into meats and from there I got on the tuna and chicken bandwagon. They aren't as easy to eat as dairy but so worth it when you look at the protein versus carbs counts. She prob. wouldn't be too pleased to know how many fruit carbs I've been eating since May (first strawberries then the watermelon, oh my!) but it hasn't hurt my weight loss and I know it is only seasonal so it isn't stressing me. Fresh, fresh fruits and veggies taste so wonderful now that I'm not going to deny myself while they are in season. Molly

Yes, carbs do exist in EVERYTHING, however I think where it matters is the SOURCE of the carbs, you want GOOD carbs... Nothing white if at all possible. I know this is not realistic for some but I truly want nothing to do with white carbs, refined flours/sugars ever again.. it is what got me obese in the first place along with deep fat fried foods. Try eating whole grain/high fiber foods for startchy items. Otherwise beans are a great whole grain and protein source.. milk has milk sugars/fructose but is considered a good carbohydrate. There are few in good veggies as long as you don't eat the starchy ones. Although sweet potatoes have good carbs and is a low glycemic index food. They are great with spray butter and cinnamon on them.. yumo! Or baked as fries. Fruit has carbs some more than others.. I tend to stick with lower glycemic ones.. berries. However apples are another one I am actually not allergic to so I do those as well. Carbs are a funny issues for me right now as you know. I still end up wanting to go less than 60ish even though I am told we can go higher. I just have a fear of carbs b/c I was diabetic before surgery (for a short while) and changed my ways of eating then and got really carb concious, but now I am having bowel issues.. gonna add some fiber supplements and can hopefully bring my carbs back down b/c that is how I have lost the best so far.. low carb/high protein.

Piggybacking a question here....the sweet potatoes don't set off cravings? I have been afraid to try them because the only way I've enjoyed them before was the traditional billion-calorie Thanksgiving style. Just the thought of that sounds like a diabetic coma right now. Yuck! Fiber...I may be having too much. I'd be happy with one bm a day. With the extra fiber supplements today it has been more like 4...owie! LOL Oh well, 'stuff' is moving appropriately and my tummy pooch has gone down again. Molly

Hey Molly.. well I have only had a sweet potato twice since surgery and no it didn't set off any cravings for me.. they just don't do what white potatoes do for me.. give me a HIGH.. lol.. but sweet potatoes with artificial butter spray and cinnamon they are yum.. but not as good as thanksgiving style for me at all.. i can honestly take em or leave em.. funny how different things trigger us.. give me a white potato with butter and sour cream and im in hog heaven.. must stay away from those! I am going to a wedding tomorrow Molly out of town in Minneapolis.. no wont' be going over the bridge that no longer exists, its south of there (those poor people). I was wondering if you would be so kind to post tomorrow's eats post for me? I would really appreciate it.. I will be basically gone now through Monday as I still have to work Sat and Sun night. Thanks so much!

Yes, I think that what matters is the source of the carbs. I am definetly staying away from white carbs. My carbs are from dairies and fruits which I do not plan to stop eating because I need them in my diet and I love cheese. I think that giving up carbs will make me loose much much more weight and I do not want to loose that much. I only want to loose about 40 lbs more and my window of opportunity is to wide now to eat much less.
