Um, help! How do I measure semi-solids...?
In six days, I'll have finished four weeks of post-op pureed foods. According to my doctor, I'll be able to move on to what he calls "semi-solid" foods for the next four weeks.
Some examples that I already have:
Mashed potatos.
Cottage Cheese.
Thin lunch meat.
Soft cheeses.
Does anyone else have any ideas? I'm open to foods, preparations, etc.
Also, the more important question: How will I know how much to eat? I've been using little one-ounce medicine cups for my pureed soups and protein shakes, but how do I measure things now? I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I don't want to go through the pain of too much food in my little pouch - I've done it a couple of times, and it isn't pretty.
I posted the web address for a very good list of puree and soft foods on it's own so other people here would see it too. There are good recipes in it and good ideas. For me, the runnier the puree the better and I am able to get 2 ounces in. I've been saving my babyfood meat jars so that I can re-load them with my own things in portion-controlled amounts for when I go back to work. Today I mixed up some water packed tuna and salsa puree and put them in the babyfood jars. Very handy to be able to grab when I know it is time for a 'feeding' but I don't really want to eat anything and nothing looks good.
Also, I'm measuring with a standard tablespoon. 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese is 1 ounce and about all I can do of such a dense food. I found a neat little set of three measuring cups by Oxo that are the type with a slanted measure inside the cup so you can look down and see the measure instead of it being on the side. They are only 2ounce cups so I know if I'm having a runny soup I go right to the 2 ounce and something more dense I stick to the 1 ounce.

How have you been doing? I had two weeks of clear liquids only and am about to finish up my 2 weeks of soft foods. I have been lucky and have had no problem. My doctor said to eat 1/2 cup at the most but to start out slow, chew everything 30-40 times and not to worry if you can only eat a tablespoon or two. I really have just been focusing on eating until I am full and have had no problem so far. I have been eating:
fat free cheese
fish (I have tried crab, lobster and talapia)
dark meat chicken
Light tuna w/ a little bit of fat free mayo
fat free refried beans
pinto beans
thin sliced deli turkey meat
eggs
The talapia and chicken made me feel the most uncomfortable but I did not get sick. The refried beans were a little dry so I now mix them with pinto beans and I put a little bit of taco seasoning on it for spice. I tried egg whites at first but did not like it all so I do have an over easy egg from time to time. Tuna has been good and the deli meat is okay but not my favorite thing. My dietician said to try things alone at first to see how it is tolerated and then you can mix it together if you would like. Good luck. I move on to lean proteins and my diet for life on Monday. Wish me luck!
i had my surgery on 12-21-06 and at my 2 week check up my dr said i could eat whatever i wanted (short of the obvious no-no's) --i am a very careful measurer i DONOT ever want to be sick............i have avoided red meats because i have heard they are difficult to digest.........my dr had me on clear liquid for the first 2 weeks and i have have gradually worked my way thru cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, dark chicken, turkey, pinto beans --now i am having vegetables (which i really missed). I stay to the 1/2 cup total ...so sometimes 1/4 c salad and 1/4 c protein.......so far so good....i am 4.5 weeks post op and have lost 32lbs........
i always have the "rules" as have been told to me by my dr. in the forefront of my mind....last thing i want to do EVER is be sick.........or fail........
I think that it is very interesting the differences between dr's and how they approach the post op diets....fascinating...dawn
