What is the time line really?
I had my surgery on a Tuesday morning and was released from the hospital on Friday. They talked about letting me go on Thursday but I live 2 hours away so the Dr. wanted me to stay until Friday.
I will be returning to work next Tuesday, so that gives me three weeks off work. However I can not lift anything when I return.
I had Lap RNY.
Hi Janet,
I had mine on Thursday,Dec. 21 and I had a bit of bleed ing trouble (too much ginko still in my system maybe) but I still went home on Sunday morning. I teach and I will go back to school this Monday, Jan. 8. I know I will be tired at the end of the day, but I feel I am ready to go. I have the weight limit too.

Hi Janet,
I had mine done laproscopicly on Dec 19th. I took 4 days off work before the Christmas break. I went back to work on Jan 2nd. I drive a bus. I had my first post op check up on Jan 3rd. My Dr said that I have no restrictions. I can lift things, just be careful. If it feels wrong or hurts don't do it. I just got on pureed foods. Good luck with everything. Remember every Dr is different. Just follow your Dr instructions and all will be well.

Janet I had surgery on Dec 22 out of the hospital on the 24the and was back to work on Jan 2. It actually feels better being active that sitting around the house being depressed. I was a little depressed the week after but it lifted and I am feeling great, and you will too, you just have to push yourself..
Take care, Erin
Hi Janet!
I JUST posted on Delana's post on a similar theme, so I am going to be lame and copy it into yours too I was in the hospital 3 days, and my disability care manager sent me back to work 14 days after being operated on, and I truly felt is was too early...I have had to take 1/2 days at work this entire week. Good luck!

Hang in there!
I had lap RNY, and still have searing pain in my lower left side, I call it my Demon Child/Alien....I've been told it's normal. Am I an MD? nope. I did have my check up yesterday tho, and the clinic told me to relax, it takes up to 4 wks for the lap RNY, and 6-8 for the open RNY. My close friend had the open RNY, and her incision made her miserable for some time. She couldn't sleep comfortably for a long time, I remember that.
As far as length of surgery, I haven't a clue...I was under 3.5 hrs, and in recovery for 1 hr after that, in my room 5 hrs after I walked into the hospital. I had a huge team tho, the surgeon, 2 P.A.s (surgical physician assistants), and 2 other anesthesia folks....plus the nurses, etc. I was amazed and remember smiling at the team as they all started on setting up my arms, and then I was out like a light.
As a lap RNY candidate, I read everyday about how some people are biking 3 weeks later, etc. First, it's 20 degrees here in MN, so that's not gonna happen for me for about 6 months, and second, I try not to compare my recovery to others, as we are all different.
The LAP Band folks are up and running after what seems like 2 days! I met a LAP Bander at my swallow test the next day after surgery, and he said he was going back to work in 3 days! I met him again yesterday at our clinic, both of us are 17 days post op, and her had been at work for 2 weeks....he wasn't kidding! I dunno how they do that...
Ok, I have rambled enough, for sure. So, best to you, and keep on truckin'.

Hi Janet...every person and every doctor is different. So, you'll just have to see how you feel. I had surgery on Thursday, came home on Saturday and went back to work on Tuesday. I felt and looked like I never even went in to the hospital. I planned on being out of work for the week, and when I should up on Tuesday, my boss came up to ask me when I was going to have the surgery. She couldn't believe that I was back already. I would've went in on Monday, but my back was hurting me. I have been non-stop since. You know when you need to rest. Your body will let you know. Good luck with your surgery!! Cathy
Janet, congratulations on your upcoming surgery!! If your job doesn't involve lifting the timeline sounds right. My job IS heavy lifting so I'm off work for 8 weeks. (It has been lovely!) My only worry now is that I have no energy and no stamina. It worries me to think how in the world I'm going to survive 8 hours on my feet, running around and lifting such heavy things all day. Let alone trying to figure out how in the world to accomodate all the weird feedings and getting in the water requirements. It will be interesting!

I had my surgery (laparoscopic RNY ) on 12/8 on a Friday morning and was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
I did not go back to wor****il January 2 which was about 3 weeks.
I am glad I did this because the first 2 weeks, I was sore and still trying to get my act together. The 3rd week was fantastic and I was feeling good, out and about and not hurting anymore, I was also off of liquids and onto soft solids which I think gave me more energy. It was also that 3rd week that I started getting the sleep that I needed because I could get comfortable and not have to sleep in a chair.
I think I would have regretted going back the 2nd week because I didnt feel like sitting in the office all day, putting on restrictive clothes and the commute back and forth to work.
Timelines vary, some people are out 2 weeks and some are out up to 6 weeks. You may be able to ask your doctors office for an additional week, you dont want to stress yourself or your body, you want time to heal and then time to get your bearings about you before jumping back into work. My surgeons office didnt tell me when to go back, I told them when I was going back (they had to fill out my disability paperwork) and called to ask me when would I be going back.
It all depends on what type of work you do. I work in an office and am up and down quite a bit but most people in my office that had RNY (and there are a lot of us), took 3 weeks off.
You control this, they dont know if you will be feeling up to it in 2 weeks so I would have that conversation with them once you get out of the hospital and let them know how YOU feel and whether YOU are ready to be released.
Good luck to you.
