How long were you on full liquids?

Before surgery my Nut said 7 - 10 days. Because this week is Christmas my Surgeons office is closed. The first appointment I could get for follow up was 4-Jan. That will mean I will have been on full liquid for 16 days before I get advanced to pureed. That seems like a long time to me.

Really? Wow, I was moved from clear to full liquids in the hospital the second day. It's funny to me how everyone's Dr is just a little different. I hope you are doing well.

I am to be on a liquid diet with includes plain non fat sugar free yogurt and SF jello and SF pudding. It is going to last until Jan 3rd when I have my first post op appointment. Then I should be going on pureed food. I can hardly wait. The liquid diet is getting boring. I have tried to mix it up a little with different stuff like SF pudding and SF popsicles. Just think in a few months we will be able to try solid foods. Hopefully. I hope your Christmas was good. Mine was ok. A little depression. You know my head saying you should be enjoying all the food too. Got through it. Take it easy. Corinn

I was only on liquids the day before my surgery. Then I was only suppose to be on SF jello, broth, water and protein drinks for one week. Yesterday I got to start eggs for one meal then broth and jello. For the next two days, I am suppose to add one new protein food daily until I am eating protein at each meal. My protein includes cottage cheese, yogurt, string cheese, refried beans, tofu, deli chicken or turkey and fish. My doctors and dietician never put anyone on the pureed diet. So I was happy about that. It is funny how every doctor is different! I do get to go in for my appointment with my surgeon tomorrow so I am happy about that so I can get these darn staples out! Ok, quick question. You had a RNY, right? I like your diet. I love cheese and meat and it is going to be at least 20 days before I start soft foods. I am on full liquid from post op day 4. I was on a two week liquid diet before surgery. I wonder if different surgeons have different techniques and maybe that is what accounts for some of the differences we see or if it is just different theories that determine the post surgery diet. Anybody know? Thanks, Bridget

I really like my doctor's and dietician's approach to their diet. They said they would never want to do pureed so they don't think we as RNY patients should. I know a couple of people that went to the same doctor and they have lost over 100 or more pounds within a year. I don't know why doctor's have such different techniques. But I know they want me to start getting in my protein early because it helps with healing. And I haven't had any problems with eggs or deli turkey yet. I just talked to my dietician this morning and I asked why so many doctors are so different. And she just told me that they learned from doctors in California so that is where their techniques come from. She told me that some doctors include pudding and soft things like that but she said that some people see that as a comfort food and that it can trigger cravings. They really don't want us to even drink Crystal light yet and no juice, jus****er. It will be tough but I like everything except the tofu and fish on my list for two weeks. So it shouldn't be too bad. I can even make like chicken salad. And also that we need to treat our pouch as a baby's tummy and give it one thing at a time. But it is funny that they said one day you may be able to handle a food and the next it can make you sick. That is what I am not crazy about. Anyway that's about all I know about the differences.

Very interesting thread! My doctor and nut. go clear liquids in hosp., two weeks of full liquids (whi*****ludes very thinned soups), 6-8 weeks of puree and then soft foods till the three month mark when you go on the regular bariatric diet. I had the same problem with missing my two-week appt. because of Christmas but they had the nut. give me a phone consult on that date and she cleared me for the puree. However, I've had so much trouble trying to get it down that I'm still doing the liquids. Am afraid that when I go in tomorrow I may end up getting scoped to see about a possible stricture. Ick... Hi - had my surgery on 12/4 and my doctor told me - 2 weeks of clear liquids then 4 weeks of soft foods. Well - after 10 days of chicken broth, sugar free jello and popsicles - I had enough - so I made myself a scrambled egg. I was only able to eat 2 or 3 fork fulls - it made me feel better and I kept it down without a problem. The next day - I tried a couple fork fulls of mashed potatoes - the day after that - I had a little bit of tuna fish. So far, - I 've had no problems. Officially - Im not supposed to start eating this soft foods until tomorrow - but I just couldnt take the clear liquids anymore. I havent gotten sick and I feel great.
