Naysayers?
Ok, I am scheduled for surgery the 18th, and have been talking about it, seeing doctors, and working with the insurance for the past 2 years. Today I am at my mom's house and I am talking about the surgery and showing my sister the before and after pics, and my mother says, "you are going to be disappointed, you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet." She has been one of the people that has been the toughest on me for being fat, always, and now that I'm trying to do something about it, she's being so negative. I asked her earlier in October abou****ching the kids for me and she said yes, she would, now she's not giving me a definate answer. I'm starting to panic that everything is falling apart at the seams. I'm sorry for ranting, but I'm a single mom and there's no one else to talk to. Bridget
Bridget, first of all, you have done your research so you kow this is the right choice for you! Don't let others sway you this far in the game. Second of all, your mom is scared and the only way she knows how to show it is through negativity. She is probably thinking that if she is negative and makes it hard by throwing roadblocks in your way, that you will change your mind. What about your sister as a back up plan? Could she be a resource? Biggest thing is not to give up...you are too close to the losing side!
I am a single mom too, but luckily my mother is somewhat supportive of the surgery. It is everyone else that bugs me about it. EVERYONE is an expert - even the group at pre-op teaching were filling eachother with stories that were incorrect or maybe even flat out lies! I decided not to tell anyone at work about my surgery. In fact, I only told my immediate family. I can't stand everyone's negativity. AND, so many people say that lap banding or gastric bypass is the "easy way" and that I should just try this diet that they are on, etc.... I refuse to hear it anymore. I am going to work hard at becoming a healthy person again and I have no room for naysayers!
Think of your kids and how great it will be for them to have a mommy that is healthy and energetic! Think of how healthy they will become if they see you making good choices. We can find support here on this message board even if our friends and family are failing us right now.
Good luck and stay positive!
