Excercise
Here is my confession, I am not excercising and am wondering what other December folks are doing for excercise, What, how long, how often? I don't mind doing it when I get started but getting started just isn't on my agenda. I had hoped that I would miraculously (sp) enjoy excercising after surgery and it just hasn't happened.

Actually Sherr I (with embarrassment) am having the same problem. Partly because lack of energy. Not an excuse but an explaination. When I saw the Nutritionist last week, she said I am not taking in near enough calories. I am still having problems with finding food appealing (what a change ).
I am looking into the Parks and Recreation paper. I was hoping to find swimming classes at an indoor pool. I have taken Water Aerobics in the past. Having Fibromyalgia my Dr. recommends swimming as a good form of exercise for me. But I found Square/Line Dancing listed, and that sounds like fun and will get my lazy butt up and moving.
My Dr. and Nutritionist suggest walking for 5 minutes 3x a day to start, and then increase it a little each day. I have done that today, even though I am VERY SORE from activity from a couple days ago.
I was doing so good the first week or two after surgery. Then I started having problems keeping anything down, felt pukey all the time.
That lasted about a month. Boy, am I glad that is over! But I need to do better about eating my three meals so I have the energy and stamina for exercise. I am wasting so much food because I don't like much of anything anymore. Do you have the same problem?
So, no you are not the only one...I am guilty too.

I hate exercise, too. No miracle here, either. Some weeks are better than others, but I walk 2 - 3 days per week. Only 20 - 30 minutes at a time. And I go to Curves 2 -3 times per week. Sometimes it's a walking week and sometimes it's a Curves week, or a combination of the two. My schedule is so crazy, I just do what I can. So far this week, I walked 30 minutes Monday, and 20 minutes each day Tuesday and Wednesday. I feel like I'm not doing enough, but at least it's something. Just make a commitment to do something to get you started. Even if it's a short walk 3 times a week. The weather has been gorgeous lately, so get outside and enjoy it. Good luck!

Hi Sherr,
I'm also not exercising yet. I have some disk problems with my back so I can't really do much till that's taken care of... except (and here's where i'm being really bad) workout in the water. The thing is, I really don't want to get into a bathing suit in front of anyone!
I'm getting scheduled for an epidural shot of cortisone so that might help things enough so I can at least go walking THen it's a matter of making myself. sigh.
Good luck with the epidural....I did a round of 3 and a facet blocker. The epidurals didn't do much for me but some folks say they are great! I hope it works. I do have to say though that since I have lost @ 65 lbs, I have quit taking the darvacet & muscle relaxers that I used to live on just to move. Now I occasionally take a tylanol & that is working fine!! I am also guilty of not exercising like I should. I just moved from GA to TX last week & everything is so craxy!! But, there is hope...there is a 24 hr exercise room on the property!!! YEAH!! I can't wait to get started so maybe i will loose faster & not sag so bad. Good luck to all.

Sherr,
I've been exercising since the first week out of the hospital. I have a Gazelle (around $95) that is very easy on the knees and joints. It's quiet and I can do it while watching TV. I started out with 10 minutes and have worked myself up to 20-30 minutes on it and have added my floor exercises trying for 5 days a week.
At the 4 week mark, I was released to full exercise. I went to my hospital's sports medicine center and was assessed by a physical therapist. She has given me exercises to strengthen my knees and core area. I have light free weights, exercise bands and a balance ball. I try to see her once a week. It has worked wonders for my confidence and I know that I'm doing the exercises the correct way.
Like others on this board, it has been strongly suggested that I look into water aerobics. I don't feel comfortable showing this body in public. I have been released to go to a health club. I just feel more comfortable working out at home. Also, I don't need a babysitter because my gym is always open.
Do, you miraculously start enjoy exercising? No, but the health benefits are immediate. I feel much better now that I exercise. Start slow and work you way up.

I'm walking on the treadmill 6 days a week. I started out at about a mile a day - now I'm up to between 2 and 3 miles. I don't do it all at once. I've found it works best for me to do it right after every meal for 20-30 minutes (it helps to keep me from drinking too soon). Even if I can only get in 10 minutes, I still do it just to maintain the habit.
Before surgery I used the treadmill much less - I think because I was trying to do it all at once. I couldn't regularly find enough time, so it was easy to just blow it off. By breaking it into smaller pieces and doing it whenever I can, it keeps the excuses at bay.
Obviously it helps a great deal to have a treadmill at home. I've got it set up with a little TV and hooked into my TIVO. If the show I'm watching is good enough I barely realize I'm exercising!
