Diet Pepsi cravings
Does anyone else miss soda? I am dying for a diet pepsi. I think I had a real addiction to it. I have heard that some people let it go flat and drink it then. Has anyone here tried it yet? Also, how come all our liquids are caffeine-free? Would a little caffeine cause a problem? I miss the little kick in the morning. Sunny
Sunny,
My nutritionist said that its ok to have soda but to keep it on a minimum but I was never a big soda drinker to start with. She suggested to let the soda go flat because of the carbonation. I did have a soda craving a few weeks ago because everyone around me was drinking soda and had about 2 oz. of diet soda flattened. It helped take the craving off but I personally never cared for flat tasting soda. I miss soda but I am going to try to stick with my goal to not drink any soda until I get to my goal weight of 175 and then by then I'll see if I still miss the soda or can give it up for good. After I hit goal, then I will gradually start adding new things to my diet on a minimum basis.
I had really been missing my diet soda up until this weekend. I had a church function over the weekend and that's all there was to drink. I tried one and only drank a few sips. They don't taste good to me anymore.
I believe the caffeine issue is because it is difficult enough already to get in the recommended fluids. When we drink caffeine, we should drink at least one additional glass of water.
For now, I'm staying away from them. But if it had tasted good, I probably wouldn't be able to control myself!
Good luck.

Last year, a few months before my surgery, I gave up soda and it was so HARD. I had a 6+ can a day habbit. Two years ago, I gave up drinking alcohol and it was FAR more work giving up soda then it was the alcohol.
Now, I am post op and my surgeon strongly forbids drinking soda EVER. I know that it will be a challenge for me. I would rather have an ice cold coke then any food in the world right now, but I am not going to.
After speaking with my nutritionist she said that caffeine really does a number on your metabolism and your overall health. I tested her theory while still a PreOp, and am now a FIRM believer myself that it is MUCH easier to lose weight while not consuming high amounts of cafeine. Basically, it messes with your metabolism and your mind, because it is a catalyst for cravings. She also mentioned that cafeine maybe the cause of some ulsers.
But, from my understanding the main concern with soda is not the cafeine, but the carbination as well.
When I really crave a soda I reach for Propell water in Black Cherry. It is the closest thing I can get to my old favorite Dr. Pepper. It has the same basic taste, minus the cola and the carbination. Give it a try, it might help.
Let me first say that I am in no shape, form, or fashion a Dr or health nut or I wouldn't have needed this surgery. Now that is stated, what is wrong with you guys. CARBONATION IF FORBIDDEN FOR US!! Especially being that we are all newly post ops, we should be trying to maximize the weight loss and avoiding things like soda. I have seen two nutrionist and they have both STRICTLY FORBIDDEN CARBONATED DRINKS PERIOD! As it was explained to me the carbonation fills the pouch with gas and can possibly stretch it. This is totally defeating the purpose as to why we have chosen this way of life. I underdstand we all have cravings as this battle isn't east, but please my fellow Oh'ers please don't sabatoge your weight loss so early in the game. Please check out some of these articles that I have found.

I have had a sip or two of my husband's soda a couple of times when he has had a glass. Just this past week, I bought a 20 ounce bottle of Cherry Vanilla Diet Dr. Pepper and a Coke Zero. I put them in the fridge and have had a drink of them on probably 3 of the past 7 days. I am drinking about one ounce at a time. I am not drinking it along with anything else so that there is no risk of overfilling the stomach even with the carbonation. Sometimes it's just nice to have a sip of something besides water, milk, or juice. Something with a little pep. Ya know? I wasn't a huge soda addict, but I did love to have one each morning pre-op. I didn't have any trouble giving them up though.
Caffeine increases appetite and affects metabolism. I have had an unsweetened tea (sweetened with Splenda that I carry in my wallet) on about 4 occasions since surgery. I LOVE sweet tea! It is my absolute favorite. For a while after surgery, I was making caffeine free tea sweetened with Splenda at home. I haven't been doing that lately, so I have been enjoying getting a glass of tea when I am out and about. We are only required to LIMIT caffeine intake so I figure one caffeinated beverage on average 3 times a week is limited. My husband was in the hospital for his RNY Monday thru Wednesday this week, and I had tea twice from the cafeteria.
There's my confession.
